GANDE, PRICE & CO.] HAVE GOOD YEAR.
In the course of an interesting | RESULTS SHOW PLEASING lecture at the University on archi-
CHANGE FROM 1928. tecture of the period of the Italian
Renaissance (1400-1630), Mr. C. E. The 33rd ordinary - annual meet- Moore yesterday gave an illuminating of Messrs. Gande, Price & Co., ing account of the great architectd, was held yesterday at St. sural triumph known nowadays as the Cathedral of St. Peter's in Rome.
The lecturer stated that it was the ambition of Julius II. to build the finest enthedral in the world
Supporting the Chairman were Mr. Kenneth Chan and Mr. Lèung Yan Pd (Directors). Shareholders present were Mt. Chow Tung Sang, fr. S. Yamanchi, Mr. Pang Kok Sui, Mr. D. Rumjahn and Mr. C. Bond (Secretary),
George's Building, at noon. The Chairman, Mr, S. C. Pank, in the course of his speech, remarked that although the profit for the year might be considered small, it was pleasing to note that after deduct- ing the loss incurred in 1998, there remained a net profit of 84,000.79, which the directors proposed to to shelter his own tomb. The pre-arry forward to 1830. He said the sent Cathedral of St. Peter's had results were a pleasing change from its origin in that intention, but the those of 1909. shrine of Julius II, was placed in an insignificant church elsewhere.
St. Peter's was the work of many great architects and it was built under the direction of many Popes. The work was commspeed in 1506 and was not finished until 1020. Among the many famous architects who were engaged in the building "of the Cathedral were Bramante
Raphael, Berazzi and Michael Angelo. These great men, besides being architects, as everybody knew, were supreme in the world of painting and sculpture. Allar chitects of those" days had to learn these arts.
The lecturer went on to say that the Italian Renaissance was the architecture of palaces and dwellings and it was the start of a revival of architecture in the then civilised world.
...
In the seventeenth century, said Mr. Monre, the Italian Renaissance spread to France, after which it found its way to England, where they had men like Sir Christopher Wren, the famous architect of St. Paul's, Robert Adam and Inigo Jones, who acquired direct duen tion in Rome from the Renaissance.
The lecturer said that in the period of which he was speaking, the predominance of religion spread into Italy, and many scholars found their way into the country. The building of churches was an incentive and stimulaat to the architects in the early days of the Renaissance. The period was marked by a freedom of design in architecture and could well be call ed the architecture of the logic of Food taste. The Greek architecture was the logic of temples and the Gothic architecture the logic of the rault. The Italian Renaissance in architecture started in Florence, and "went to Rome, where it reached ita
zenith, I declined in teso.

Almond kernels, of which the Chinese people are very fond, are sold at as high as #115 per picul, due to very limited supplies. They are imported from North China.
Prices of brass, copper and bronze have risen by twenty per rent, as compared two months ago, owing to the exchange. These metals are chiefly imported from Japan.
Some 233,768 ounces of silver in the form of bullion, more than 116,000 dollar pieces and. 90,000, 20- cent Kwangtung silver coing were imported into the city during
March.

Honey is consumed in large quan- tities in the city and is imported from the West and North River districts. Recently, arrivals have been short and prices have risen from 927.30 to 838 per picul..
The cotton
yara market has again become inactive, there being practically no demand. In spite of the rise in purchase prices, the quotations remain low. According to a Shanghai telegram, the quota- tions have risen by two dollars there

There has been but very limited demand for foreign piece goods, consequent on the Government's or. der that all Governmental em ployees must wear Chinese dress materials a from the 1st inst. The higher price of foreign gooda caus ed by the exchange is another con
Government. Formerly, there were more than thirty companies in the city, but at present, only one-third of this number are carrying on. On the contrary, foreign insurance merchants are doing well.
