ARMY ESTIMATES. NAVAL CONFERENCE

REDUCTION OF HOME FORCES.

CANCELLATION OF WORK AT SINGAPORE.

[THROUGH REUTER @ AGENCY.]

LONDON, March 24. In the House of Commons to-day Mr. Toni Staw, introducing the Army Estimates, emphasised the progressive reduction of the British military forces to 145,000, and said that the Government did not intend to make another reduction in arma ments without an international agreement.

The Opposition loudly, cheered Mr. Shaw when he said that the facts were confounded by theorists (meaning Labour "left wingers), who contended that we should help the cause of general disarmament by ourselves reducing armaments, regardless of other nations.

Policy in China,

Mr, Shaw said that the Govern tient's policy in China was sym pathetically to watch the efforts of China to establish her own form of Government. The British Goy ernment would act. in way with the other Powers to make arrangements to secure the safety of their people in a self-governing China.

In a debate that followed the left. wing Labour mariber, Mr. William Cove, moved a resolution express- ing the opinion that all military preparation for warfare was waste- ful, serving only the needs of the capitalist and of imperialism, and demanding & policy of extensive annual reductions of the military forces and the immediate with drawal of all slate grants for the maintenance of the training corps and cadet corps,

In the course of the debate. Sir. Laming Worthington Evans de clared that he was not surprised that Mr. Shaw was little sketchy in dealing with Singapore, the Federated Malay States were contributing £9,000; and New Zealand, £20,000, while only £33,000 was being spent, so Mr. Shaw had 4 profit of £88,000 towards the general army expenditure,

Mr. I. Cove's amendment was defeated by 274 votes to 21.

(THROUGH BEUTER'S AGENCY.

LONDON, March. 94.. Mr. A. V. Every country represented at the Conference recognised the genuine British desire to help and, in the face of a solemn declaration re- nouncing war, it was inconceivable that the delegates who came London for the express purpose should be unable to reach ad agree. ment.
