GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE-MARKET.

STEADY TONE PREVAILS PRIOR TO THE HEAVY MARCH SETTLEMENT.

FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.

[By " KUFAN."]

THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1930.

"Gossip often moves the market, HONG KONG TRAMS-Follow- but no incestor should either bug|ing the dividend, shares were dealt or sell on market gossip only.

The tone of the share-market during the past week has been very steady, and from all accounts it appears the volume of business negotiated has been fairly large.

A good deal of the buying and selling that was going on was on account of the March Settlement, which takes place to-day. It is reported that this business is even bigger than the last December Settlement, and it augurs well for holders of Hong Kong stocks that large periodical settlements again becoming the order of the day on the local Rialto.

in at 220, but the rate slid down to $10.70 ex dividend, and closed with sellers at the latter rate. Buyers are only offering $19.50 for shares.

HONG KONG ROPES-After being neglected for a very long time there were inquiries for this stock at 85. These inquiries were not satisfied, and the price gradu, ally went up to 6.25 and then to

26.50.

At the close of the week buyers were offering the latter rate for shares but without getting any.

*

*

RAUBS The rise in this mining stock had a slight setback during the week, after sales, had taken place at $10 and $10.50. Buyers were only offering $18.50 for shares at the close.

羹 China

The biggest business during the week has been in Trams and Hotels, due no doubt to the reported niego tiations for the purchase of the Queen's Road 'buses by the Hong Kong Tramways, Limited. Lights also improved during the week, but inquiries have failed to show any substantial reason for this rise, and perhaps the upward movement is in some way due to shorts covering for to-day's settlement.

HONG KONG BANKS-Owing to the rise in exchange these shares had a slight setback. Business was done during the week at $1,360, but on Saturday there were sellers at this figure on the market, but with To huyers.

week will and formation last answers to their queries below:- HUT—There is no fear of a great drop in rates. Better wait a few more weeks before doing anything in the matter.

TROUBLED-Rumours quite un- true Even if they were true, the anticipated rise would not come off, as the negotiations were not so one-sided as gossipers seen to think.

CHINA LIGHTS Old shares were sold during the week at 890.93 to 81, and new shares fetched 815 at the beginning and $10 at the close of the week. The Combined shares also appreciated from $24 to 3, and closed with buyers at the latter figure. The rise, it is understood, is due to shorts, cover- ing the Settlement position,

ELECTRICS-These shares im proved slightly during the week. and after ebares were negotiated at 866 improved to a buying rate of $60.75.

CEMENTS There was a slight" lull in this stock over the week, and a little easing off" was noticed. Sales took place at $14.40, and sellers are still holding out for ten cents more, but are getting no response.

EWOS-During the week there' shares came down considerably. but not alarmingly. Sharea were sold at Tis. 13.50 to Tls, 13.15 ex dividend. At the close of the week there were buyers again at Tis 13.50. It will be interesting to watch the position of this stock after the March Settlement,

HONG KONG HOTELS-There was a fairly large demand for Hotel. shares during the week, due to the prospects of an advantageous sale of the bus business. A large busi- ness was done in this stack between 812.65 and $12.80, and the market closed with buyers at the latter figure,

HONG KONG LANDS-A In shares changed banda, at 205.75 it the commencement of the week, but the rate steadily climbed up until 266:50 was reached. Rre buyers in the market at the latter rate.

HONG KONG TRADE. DAILY SHARE QUOTATIONS.

TEXTILE TRADE STILL·

·QUIET.

The fortnightly report of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce Lontains the following references to textile business :-

Cotton Place Goods, and Fancy.

Cotton Goods.

Beyond enquiry at quite inade- quate rates for certain descriptions of Cotton Fancies for July-August shipment there is nothing of im- portance to report in the Fancy Section. Some small sales of old chops of White Shirtings (actually effected some three weeks age) have now come to light. Clearances of Spring Fancy styles continue good and shew profitable returns to dealers. Offtake of Staples is dis- appointing, and likely to remain so until tree movement of cargo to Kwangsi is possible.

Raw Cotton values have advanc ed, latest quotations to hand being those of 20th instant. Mid. Am.

8.378. Eg. Sakel. 13.85d. "Spot

Another report states:- There have been some enquiries

for White Shirtings and miscellane

ous lires of cottons, but in most enses the offers have proved un- workable. The local market has not advanced sufficiently to offset the serious increase in prices brought about by the drop in ex- change. Latest cable advices from Manchester indicate that the mar ket is steadier, with an upward tendency. Clearances of Spring cargo continue to be fairly satis factory, but the new duty of 21 per cont. levied by the Canton Customs from the 16th instant may adverse- ly affect further movements.

Another report states:

The market has been very quiet, and with the exception of small sales of Warp Satins and Italiana. there is nothing to report. Clear- asces still remain brisk for all kinds of Spring Fancies with prices steady and firm.
