It may interest you to know that our sales for the year again show an increase. The drop in exchange baa affected profits to a certain extent, but as it has always been our policy to safeguard the food supply of the Colony by carrying adequate stocks of imported pro duce, we were able to postpone the revision of our price lista until the 1st of January.
In addition to our arrangements for attending to the trade of Kow. loon, your Directors have not over looked the developments in that neighbourhood, and this will be kept in mind and arrangements made to meet the inereased demand for dairy and other produce.
The Heri.
In view of the very progressive and satisfactory state of the Com- pany's live stock, a few remarks in this connection may not be out of place.
The health of the herd through- out the year has been excellent.and CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH.
free from outbreaks of infectious diseases. During the absence on The Chairman addressed the
leave of our Veterinary Surgeon, meeting as foliowshe gross Mr. D. L. Me Whirter, B.Sc., the profit for the year amounts Veterinary side was well cared for 8398,818.44, which, I think, you will admit is satisfactory in these times and conditions generally have been by Major Roche-Kelly, R.A.V.S., and reflects favourably upon the management and staff of the Com-Progressive. The average yield per cow per annum has gone up from 533 gallons in 199 to 819.7 gallons in 1929, an increase of 83.6. per cent, a no mean achievement, com- paring more than favourably with that obtained from most herds in normal climes, the total average for the British Isles being about 843 gallons. This increase in yield has enabled us to maintain an almost stendy rate per gallon against food- stuffs consumed in spite of a con- siderable increase in the cost of same 14 per cent. during the past I might here say that the cost two years. Our herd is practically of production and delivery of milk being self-maintained but it is, of has gone up considerably as a result course, necessary to import fresh of the exchange position, about 75 strains from time to time and a per cent. of our cattle fodder being shipment of 10 head-15 cows and imported, whilst, our bottles, etc., 4 bulls of the Ayrshire breed ar- are now costing us more, but owing rived on January 31 from Scotland. to the very improved state of the These animals were selected from herd and the resultant increased approved herds by a well-known milk yield, to which I will refer authority on this breed, consequent- later, we have been able to main-ly good results are anticipated tain the retail price of this all im- portant commodity.
During the year we reduced the price of ice to 1 cent per lb. as a direct result of which our galea show a substantial increase and 1.do not know of any other city in the world where ice is procurable at such a low cost.
The Balance Sheet. Turning to the balance sheet, You will notice that the amounts written off for depreciation are higher than last year Ba· your Directora considered a larger per- centage should be allowed in the ense of ice plant and machinery, taking a conservative view of the Bie of same as say about 10 years.
After making allowance for bad and doubtful debts and paying bonus to the staff of 15 per cent. of their salarica, which I feel sure you will endorse in consideration of the hard work done and loyal support given, the balance at the credit of profit and loss secount amounts to $331,707.08, the second highest yet shown by the Company,
to which must be added the sum of $22,288.43, balance, carried for- ward from last account, making a total for appropriation at this meet- ing of $354,054.41. Your Directors recommend dealing with same as under, and trust that this will meet. with your approval:- Pay a dividend of 81.50

The Nanchang officials, says the the of Kiukiangcorrespondent N.C. Daily News, have sent special men to try and get the truth of the matter, but one is afraid that, as usual, the Chinese have begun to move too late.
Troops Defasted.
Kian itself is still in critical con- dition; troeps sent up were defeat. ed by the Communists and their árs taken.
A launch which ventured down the river en route to Nanchang was looted by the usual ruse of some of the brigands going as passengers, A certain place was and, when reached, they, in conjunction with bandits on the shore, held up the vessel, with the usual results.
Not only are these men virulent on the Kan River, but, east of the province, bordering on Chekiang, the same kind of thing is going on.
At Kuangsin-fu, the brigands entered the city and set fire to the yamen. The missionaries in resid- there, also, there was trouble, and ence left and went to Hokow, but information was given me that a Catholic priest bad to fee, and went over into Chekiang.
Why We Are Brigands.
A letter received gives a graphic, and, in some ways, an amusing account of the mentality of soldiers and brigands, but what a picture of lawlessness it conveys.
Rinderpest and Immunization.
The writer says 5...I Immunization of all young animals has only one lien of soldiers, and against rinderpest has been again the brigands are carried out for the third year in
very near the city. The soldiers are not keen on uccession without loss and herd immunity now stands at 50 per fight? We have not got any pay our fighting: they say 'Why should we cent., which, you will admit, re

bandits had entered the city, and commenced to attack the marqu dera. After a while, the bandits' ammunition gave out, so they call- ed out to the soldiers to stop fight. ing. They said, 'If you had money. you would not be fighting, if we had money, we would not be brigands, so we are just alike.' The soldiers thought there was renson in that, and let them depart to their mountain fastnesses, while
Alarmist rumours regarding the health of the cattle at the farm having reached the ears. of the Directors, a disclaimer was at once made in the local press and from what I have just told you, you can rest assured, that we have had no rinderpest at the farm.
Native dairies, however, have not been so fortunate and over 100 deaths from this disease have been reported, This has naturally created a sudden increased demand for milk, w fortunately at a time when our sup- plics are at their lowest and we were therefore reluctantly cempel. led temporarily to reduce the quan. tity of cream supplied to our cus tomers, which I regret caused some inconvenience to our regular clients.
Pigs.
The herd of pigs has been it creased by over 120 per cent during the year and accommodation is being made for a further increase. Much improved results are being obtained due to a change in the method of handling the breeding stock. During the year 4 boars per share of 200,000

The conditions of the purchase of our Laichikok property call for reclamation of the foreshore and laying down a roadway, and this work has almost been completed, thus enhancing the value of this property.
