DELAYED THREATENING

LETTER.

MISSIVE ACCOMPANIED WITH.

A BOMB

A letter demanding $30,000, en- closed with a bomb in a cigar-box. 1 cagaging the attention of the French Police in Shanghai. It came into their possession in an unusual manner, and it is rather difficult to understand for whom it was intended.

1

It appears. says the Y.C. Daily News, that Chinese who was walking around near the Great World two weeks ago handed a parcel coolie of the establish- ment. telling him that he would return for it a few minutes later. He did not do so, and the coolie kept the box, but getting still tired of looking after the parcel, took it to the office of the Great World compradore.

Here it was decided to investi- gate its contents, "which proved to be à box containing a letter de- manding $50,000, or worse penalties would be inflicted. The letter was accompanied by a bomb, by way ol encouragement. The compradore immediately informed the French Police of this discovery, and they have opened an inquiry into the matter. An armourer was sent for to remove the bomb and render it sale.

IMPORTANT U.S. RAILWAY COMBINE.

INTERSTATE COMMERCE COM. MISSION'S APPROVAL.

[UNITED PRESS.]

WASHINGTON, Feb, 21. In approving the merger of the Northern Pacific and Great North- ern railroads to-day, the Inter- state Commerce Commission denied the request of the lines that they be allowed to control the. Burling

ton

This was done in spite of the fact that the Northern Pacific and Great Northern hold 97 per cent. of the capital stock of the Burling- ton, which has been used as castera outlet from St. Paul and Minnes- palis to Chicago by the two lines.

The ruling does not imply, how. ever, that the merged roads shall be denied permanent entrance to Chicago, according to the commis-

sion.

The life of the merger is to be DO years, by the terms of to-day's ruling.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE

When leave of absence is required from the Corps, a special form obtainable at Corps Headquarters should be obtained and after filling. the necessary particulars in this form should be sent to the 0.C. Company as soon as possible...
