A decision to increase their rates by 20 por cent. was reached at a special meeting held by the Shang- hai Caterers' Association last week. Mr. Wong, secretary of the Asso- ciation, stated that the increase was made necessary by the falling exchange, increased duties, higher cost of imported commodities, and the higher wago scale. The in- crease in expenses, he pointed out ranged from 50 to 70 per cent, and under present conditions members of the Association found themselves unable to continue with the present rates. The secretary stated that local foreign residents were fully conversant with the increase in im- port duties, imported commoditie and the low rate of exchange, and would readily understand the deci sion of the Association.
