President Hoover's action in in- sisting that Mr. O'Connor remain na hond of the Shipping Board is considered a victory for the O'Con nor policies, for which reason it is believed that Mr. O'Connor will now proceed with plans under which several American companies will be competing with foreign lines.

TREACHERY OF JUNGLE NATIVES.

*

HOW COLONEL FAWCETT MET HIS DEATH.

There are even now some people who believe that Colonel Fawcett found the Jost people and cities that he sought in the wilds of Brazil, and that he is living with them to complete his studies of the remains of an ancient civilisation.

So declares Mr. A. R. Hinks, F.R.S., secretary of the Royal Geographical Society in a fore word to "Man Hunting in the Jungle the search for Colonel Fawcett," an account written by Mr. G. M. Dyott of his dash through the wilds in an attempt to solve the mystery of Colonel Faw- pett'a Inte.

Suit-case Ulte.

Mr. Dyott reached a spot within two or three day's march of the place where Colonel Fawcett, his so, and Raleigh Ribell were killed. He has no doubt that they were killed. He found Aloique, chief of a little tribe of Anauqua Indians, near the Kuluseu. River. The An- aquas were completely naked. Ho found in Aloique's hut a tin suit- eate which Mioique said Colonel Fawcett had given him. “Mrs" Aloique's naked infant had a small brass plate hung by a string round its neck. "The plate bore the words,

S. Silver and Compy., King William House, Eastcheap, Lon- don." This was the firm that sup- plied Fawcett's equipment.

Murdar "Acted." Aloique and another India went through a dramatic bit of acting, showing how Indians pretended friendship with Fawcett, offered hin food, and then sprang on him from behind. Aloique, at the cli- max of his story, leaped in the air like a madman and yelled at the top of his voice, "Suyas! Bung bung-bung!" at the same time hit- ting himself thrice on the back of the neck.

4.

The "bungs" stood for blows, and the Suyas were another tribe. Aloique said that it was they who killed Fawcett.
