RUDOLF WOLEF'S WEEKLY REVIEW.
London, January 31-Markets have on the whole displayed a Father firmer appearance and prices are all higher as compared with last Friday's close. There is no marked changed in the industrial situation, but as the year develops soine improvement should take place. Meanwhile, the financial position tends to become easier, and the reduction of the Rate of the Bank of France, from 34 per cent. to 3 per cent, should foreshadow some further reduction in the Bank Rate here.

All three of the main Dow Jones averages reflected declines. For 30 industrials, the average was off 5.05 to 263.41; for 20' rails, it was off 2.46 to 152.40; for 20 utilities, it was off 2.44 to 90.59.

Tin has been irregular. After earlier firmness, the market has reacted and the bigbest points have not been maintained; the price nevertheless shows an advance of 44 as compared with bar last re- port. Sales in the East during the week have amounted to 1,450 tons, To business having been effected there yesterday or to-day owing to the Chinese New Year, shipments thence up to the 27th instant were 7,565 tons, and for the month are now estimated at 8,230 tons. Pre- miums on 6traits and Banka are quoted at £1.15 and £8 (nom.) respectively. Business with consum ers has broadened slightly, both in the U.S.A. and on this side, a fair- ly active demand being generally reported. The firmness during the week may more particularly bet ascribed to reports that the Patino mines had authorized a reduction, of output, "whereby this important
