HONG KONG, BANKS: "A fairly large number of shares were hand- led by the brokers during the earlier part of the week at ratta between $1,370 and $1,375, but owing to a slight drop in exchange, a sudden spurt took place be fore the close of the week, and busincas was "registered in the vicinity of 81,300 and $1,400 Al- though buyers were not offering more than $1,390 on Saturday, sellers could not be found at this figure, and I expect $1,400 will have to be paid after the races.
́INSURANCES-During the week there were many inquiries for In- aurances shares. Buyers were offer ing $740 for Cantón Insurances without fading sellers. Hong Kong Fires were wanted at $850, but even at this high rate no busi- ness was reported. Unions stood at $350, and there are buyers in the. market at this rate. China Under- writers were the only stock:to regis ter a decline, and I imagine the call of 1 per share has something to do with this. The call is, pay- able in May. Shares were dealt in at 81.40 during the week, but even at this rate buyers are holding off, waiting for cheaper prices..

WHARVES--After shares, had changed hands at $155. further sellers appeared on the market. Three parcels were all bought up, but at the close of the week buyers. were offering less than $155 for sheres.
