Since our last, Report of the 14th instant, the February Settlement has been satisfactorily negotiated, but there is not a large amount of business passing, and prices of the speculative counters have shown an easier tendency. The chief interest has been centred round Hotels, Cements and Ewos which have been the medium of a fair turnover. Investment. stocks, helped by the further drop in Exchange, continuo firm with buyers predominating.
Banks Hong Kong and Shang- hai Banks come through from Lon- don at £s (Middle) with a small enquiry for shares locally at the im- "proved quotation of $1,390.

PROSECUTION OF U.S. OIL COMPANIES. ALLEGED CONSPIRACY IN CALIFORNIA.
(UNITED PRESE.] San Francisco, February 15.-The Federal District Attorney began anti-trust suits against seven major oil companies and 12 independent concerns, alleging conspiracy to maintain high prices.
Suit was also instituted against F. R. Long, who is accused of having purchased all surplus oil and from the "independents" turning it over to the major com- panies, who had established a fixed price list.
The action will deal principally with gasoline.
The major companies listed in oluded the Standard Oil Co. of California, the Richfield Co., the General Petroleum Corporation, the California Shell Oil Co., the Cali- fornia Union Co., the California Texis Co., and Associated Oil.

When the policeman told Dane to come to the police station for routine investigation of this minor accid- eat, Dane suddenly drew a revol ver, shot the policeman dead, and fled at such a speed, that the car dashed into a telephone pole and overturned. Extricating himself, Dang held up a passing motorist and forced him at the point of the revolver to drive thrro" miles at top speed.
