M
CANTON, February 18, Under the patronage of General Chen Ming Shu the Canton Ride held last Sunday their Second Interport Hunt which took the form of a competition with tho. Fanling Hunt and Raco Club. The event proved very successful and interesting both from the sporting and social, points of view, several hundred people taking part. It is hoped that these interport meetings, introduced last year by a couple of good sportsmen in Canton, will become a yearly institution.
The visitors' panics arrived in Canton on Saturday morning. and were stabled in a matsheit specially erected at the Northern The Feather Works, by kind permission of Mr. K. Neckelman. visitors came up by both train and boat and were the guests of the local riders and their friends.
է
DISTINGUISHED CHINESE SUPPORT.
Keen interest was shown in the events, and a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators, both Chinese and foreigners, were present. Among the Chinese present were General and Madame Chen Ming Shu, Madame Chen Chak, General and Madame Au Yang Kui, The weather was ideal, and the and General Gaston K. Wong. sky was crystalline clear. The number of spectators would un- doubtedly have been much greater had it been possible to get more vehicles to take people out to Hunters Hill, which is a little... beyond Shakpai on the eastern outskirts of the city. This Hil formed the "grand-stand" and offered an excellent view of the... surrounding country." It was becomingly bedecked with fags of all the nationalities represented, and front its crest practically the whole run, from start to finish, was visible.
Following is an eye-witnessed "description of the hunt:
THE EVENTS DESCRIBED.
The Course..
Д
The hunt was arranged as combined paperchase, covering 4.5 miles, and a point-to-point over 2.5 miles. The course, laid by the Master of the Canton Ride, Capt. N. Rob. Hjake, started cast of Sha Ho and went off into the hilly country further bast which consists of excellent hunting grounds. It then continued across the paddy fields towards the Tong Ha-Shick Pai district, then turning to the west after crossing the Canton Kowloon railway line. The course offered an ideal run in with finish below the Hunters Hill," front where most of the run, from start tis finish, was visible to spectators. The paperchase was divided up into two stages by a check, 1.5 miles from the start, with a stop for 3 minutes, counted from the time of the first arrival. After the finish of the paperchase there was an other stop of 5 minutes, whereupon the field ngain was sent off on the which IAD point-to-point along the hills and over some wet but anavoidable paddy-fields in the country between the railway and the river and also finished at the "Huntera Hill."

and Charleston. At this stage of the run Mr. Gavin on Bless was fifth up to a quarter of a mile when he was thrown off in a mad-hole, thus loosing some time. Movanagher and Doubtful finished as first and second. Third was Westlake, ridden by Mr. Hardt, who put on an ex- eilent sport passing some 10 ponica just before the finish. Fourth was Honeymoon, ridden by Mr. Fischer. Charleston with Mr. Gould in the saddle succeeded near the finish in passing Strathlorn, ridden by Mr. Bakewell, thus securing 6fth place. After Strathlon came Solitaire, which had regained much of the ground lost by the misadventure previously mentioned. Three riders from each team did not finish.
The total time of the run from the start of the paperchase to the finish of the point-to-point was 35 minutes for the winner, er, after deduction of the two intermissions of 3 and 5 minutes respectively, 97 minutes..

NEW THREAT TO THE DERBY FAVOURITES.
PEPPERMINT SHOWS SURPRISING FORM AS TRAINING COMES TO A CLOSE.
YESTERDAY'S INTERESTING TRY-OUTS.
{By" MORNING DEW.”]
A good number of ponies were given a "pipe-opener" yesterday, and some very fast half- miles were seen. The fastest last quarter was that of King's Bounty, but the animal's time "for the half-mile was slow.
Quite a large number of ponies were only sent over a quarter, but as most of these will gallop this morning their times are not included below.
The candidates from the Hynes and Mackie stable are showing great promise. Pepper- mint, the slug," did one of the best gallops of the senson, and now seems to be a serious. rival to the best ponies in the Derby. Peppercorn, over the mile and quarter, returned the ex cellent time of 9 minutes, 43.2 seconds-casily the most outstanding gallop of the day. Picalili. was under blankets, and will probably not gallop until to-morrow.
Tango, one of the best subs in training, was tried out over six furlongs and ran very easily. Baby Face and Shanghai Beau were also running convincingly, but were only stretched over a quarter.
African Eve, a prominent Derby candidate, went over a mile, doing the distance in 2.14 and 5nishing in à fraction faster than 31 seconds. This is a very good pony, and is well worth... watching, but I am afraid he is up against some very good cattle in the Hong Kong Derby.
Just a word about the betting. At the Sports Club on Monday, the highest price was fetched by Diana Bay, who replaced Wisdom Stag from the favourite's" position. The Tiger and Peppermint were next in demand, while Picallili went for a song."
In the Valley Stakes, Baby Face and Tango were the best fancied, and for the Champions there was nothing to near Apollo's price, the purchaser giving odds of 1-2.
The following visiting Jockeys will ride in the forthcoming meeting:-Messrs Haimovitch, Hill, Knoll, Collaco, Noodt, Encaraacao, Bowling, Layton, Quincey, Chang and Wong. In the training times below the jockey's name has been placed after each pony:
