THE DISCOVERY" OF THE BELGENLAND,
Tweat! tweet, tweet!
It was rather unusual, but never- theless true. Hundreds of canaries were singing their sweetest songs right in the middle of the harbour, and to find out what 'al! the merri ment was about, our representative hired a motor-boat.
It was hot work, "for first of all bundredi of junks and sampans had to be "penetrated," and after this was doin, a regular forest of birds came in sight.
"Canalie, sir?" cried one of the boatmen,He velly good sing!
"Aw," cried, somebody, good humouredly, "I guess I know what they're like Canary Why, it's baby parrot "There was a burst of laughter, and then our repre sentative, scrambling aboard this "hird ship," found that he was looking straight into the .. Bel genland.

The members of the crew wer busy buying "curios" and canaries from the floating store made fast to the giant liner. After exchanging a few words with a genial seaman the "D.P." men got on board and was taken over the ship. It is indeed a floating palace-the dining-saloon; the drawing room, the library, the gymnasium, the children's play room, the promenade decks and, fa fact, everything, on the liner, spelt comfort and luxury. The liner is also fitted with a Speakophone," a new recording device installed in the ship specially for the use of passengers.
Record Making.
The record-making machine is installed in a soundproof (room, but as it is portable and takes down every sound that reaches it, from the softest whisper to the blare of band, records that are a mixture or other sounds, often are produced;

The Belgenland, which is under the command of Captain William A. Morehouse, a native of Nova Scotia arrived here at 5.45 am. yesterday from Shanghai, which port she left on Saturday. She has a crew of 290 British and 342 "other Europeans," and will stay in this port for three days..
Most of the four hundred and two world cruise travellers landed in tenders yesterday and thorough ly enjoyed their exploration of the Colony. The big cruise ship is, by the way, on her sixth consecutive annual tour around-the-world. She has been favoured with unusually mild weather while in the, Orient, with sunshine every day since her arrival at Yokohama on January 25, from San Francisco vid Hawaii. Bright sun and moderate tempera tures were enjoyed at Feking,, the weather was mild at Shanghai, and the run down the coast to Hong Kong was made in brilliant Spring sunshine and clear nights.

In an anti-mosquito cam- paign thoroughness is everything, lack of attention to detail will spoil all. And the campaign must be spread over a sufficient area no attention being paid to artificial boundaries such as those set up by
the land office to mark out lots. If this be not done the enemy will concentrate on the borders and by aeroplane night raids continue to do damage, the raiders returning to their reserves and recruiting grounds (breeding places) before morning. One has to do as the enemy does in a campaign and the enemy is no respecter of boundaries.

Reception and Dance at Lane, Ürawford's.
In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson gave a reception to their many friends to which were invited all the Dairy Farm staff. The re- ception was held in Lane, Craw ford's Restaurant, and proved in every way a delightful function. The restaurant was given over to
dancing to the music supplied by the Lyric Baad and in the lounge were accommodated those who preferred to watch, and one of the smaller.. tables for cards. Bouquets for Hong Kong. The ship's daily newspaper, which has printed illustrated articles re- garding the port, described Hong Kong in glowing terms. It was pointed out that Hong Kong exacts no export tax from visitors; that British control here insures clean liness and order, and that there is a genuine disposition on the part of merchants, hotel keepers, trans-arine portation agents, and the public to make the stay of their American cousins at Hong Kong pleasant.
While here-from early Tuesday morning to Thursday afternoon, when the ship will sail at 3 for Manila-the Belgenland's passeng- ers will make the usual round of sightseeing motor tours, visiting the New Territory and Repulse Bay, while optional excursions will be dispatched to Chaton by rail, as was the case last year..

That was, he said, the aspect that most interested him (His Ex- cellency) as the representative of the Government. The Government had to leave it to the experts to find cut about mosquitos, and to tell them which were the dangerous ones, and bow they could be eradicated; then the Government became interested as they had the welfare of the whole. community at heart.
