CAN DIANA BAY WIN THE DERBY?

MR. DUNBAR'S CANDIDATE" SHOWS EXCELLENT

FORM OVER WEEK-END.

· COMMENTS ON LATEST TRAINING · GALLOPS.

[BY

MORNING DEW."]

"Diana Bay, the dark horse," who. had done nothing very startling in the training gallops until Saturday, surprised every-. one on Sunday morning when he put in an excellent gallop over a mile and three-quarters, finishing hard beld in 20.3 seconds.

The pony started very slowly, as his time for the mile and half given below will show. The first quarter of his last 1 miles was After this 44 seconds, this being followed by a quarter of 39.

he registered two quarters of 34 each, followed by a quarter in 32, and finishing in 29.2-hard held, be it noted! The last half- mile, it will be scen, was covered in 1.01.9, and the last three-quar- This is easily tera in 1.35.2, the last mile being done in 2.08,2. the best mile gallop among the Derby grins of the season, the more notable because the pony finished strong and full of run-

ning.

The Tiger, who did so poorly during mid-week, somewhat re- deemed himself on Saturday, going over a slow two miles and The first mile was so slow that he was finishing in 30.4 seconds.

not "clocked." but his last mile will be found below.

Windsor Stag and Wisdom Stag, two of Mr. Chan Tin Sion's Derby Candidates, both performed well, the last-named being parti- cularly convincing. He is at the present moment considered the most serious claimant for Derby honours.

I am afraid King's Bounty's chances in the classic event are gone. He was all out on Saturday, "and returned the time given below for a mile and a bali.

African Eve showed the same times as King's Bounty, but ho had plenty in hand at the end, and "I place him in a much higher category than the Dynasty representative.

The best gallop on Saturday was that of Messrs. Hynes and Mackin's Peppermint, which went over a mile and a half in 3 minutes 21.1 seconds and finished in 31.3 seconds. Peppermint's. time is the best so far for the mile and a half, and his Gnish is better than The Tiger's and Wisdom Stag's when these two ponies returned the same time for the Derby distance. Peppermint, however, was "slugging" all the way, and had to be ridden from the word "ga." Peppercorn went over a mile in 2.17, and was again" out on the course on Sunday, when he was sent over a quarter, finishing inside 30.

A number of Shanghai jockeys, including Mr. Knoll, who racegoers will recall, was one of the best jockeys available a few Against the names of the ponies- years ago, was seen at the course.

GENEROUS ODDS.

HOW THE DERBY BETTING IS GOING.

SPORTS CLUB SWEEPS.

[BY" MORNING DEW."]

The Sports Club held the first of their selling sweeps on Saturday, and there was a large attendance of owners and jockeys as well as their friends in the Club.

In the Hong Kong Derby Wisdom Sing fetched the highest price, the odds figuring out at about 2 to 1. African Eve, Diana Bay, Pepper- mint, The Tiger, and King's Bounty all fetched low prices, the odds being very generous to those who bought in these ponies. An inter- esting sale that of King's Colour, who was bought in at odds which figure slightly better than 9 to 1, and might be an indication of the public's estimation of the strength of the Dynasty stable, for clearly King's Colour is only the second string" after King's Bounty,

WLS

Mr. Ho Kom Tong and the Jar- dine Stables fetched low prices, and Gay Caballero and Silver Queen went very cheaply as well, while Orlando went to the drawer.

In the Champions, Apollo was the "grent bet" of the night, one party offering 31,700 to win 8200, which is 17-2 against. It. is not likely that Apollo will pay such a small return at the pari-mutuel, as with the excellent form shown by King's Courier, Diana Bay, Royal Flush, Sitting Bull. President Hal, and a few others, Apollo 'will at least pay. a fifty per cent. return to his back- ers, and probably more

In the Valley Stakes, Shanghai | Beau And Baby Face fetched good prices. Penshop, which is out at Fanling trying to forget all about racing. fetched A good price. although the animal, at the time of writing, is un£t.

Iron Blood. Grenndier, Tango, Tonbridge. Peter Querney and Bridge Hall, all mentioned as the" beat subs in training in Saturday's issue of this paper, fetched good prices, particularly Tonbridge, who will have the nasistance of Mr.. Haimovitch in the saddle on race- day.

Further drawings at the Scorta Club will be held to night, on Wed- nesday, and on Friday of this week, the Valleys, the Derby, and the Champions being on the card. v
