·BETRAY CONFIDENCE.
David Louw, a journalist, who refuses to divulge where a huge illegal lottery took place, and a companion named Cope appeared before the chief magistrate at the Johannesburg Court recently. It was a secret inquiry, such as is al- lowed under South African law.
Both refused to divulge the in- formation, which, they state, was given in confidence. If they re fuss.to give the desired information they are liable to eight days' im prisonment for contempt of court. The punishment can be repeated indefinitely if they persist in their refusal.
