Soap manufacturers are making no profits, large importation of for eign soap having hit the locally. made article. Soap materials come from abroad and prices have risen iu consequence of the high exchange rate.

Match manufacturers are on the They com- verge of bankruptcy. plain that their business has bem, practically killed by the competi- tion of Swedish and Japanese matches. Recently, the Man Ming Factory, one of the largest and oldest match factories in Canton closed down. The existing factories have had to reduce their staffs and over eighty workers have been dis- missed since Chinese New Year.
