“BEAUTY” CULTS OF CHINESE MURDERED MARSHAL CHIANG COMING.
SAVAGES.
THE FASHIONABLE NOSE IN BORNEO.
Fashions in the deformation and decoration of the body are illustrat ed by a collection on view at the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, London.
Primitive peoples have, it ap pears, mero excuse for their vagaries than exist for the "golden lily" feet of Chinese women. Beauty is not their only object in deformation. In illness Bushmen aro prepared to sacrifice one finger to their gods to secure their re- covery. It is better, they think, to live on, though mained or halt, than to pass whole into the shadow land beyond.
More obvious utility leads the Chinook Indians to flatten their children's heads by the application of boards and pads. By this means their capacity for carrying burd ens is enormously increased. Nei- ther their intellect nor their cour- age seem to be affected, and in some tribes the individuals who have had the misfortune to remain normal are ignominiously sold as slaves.
Hobbling of Women, Equally practical is the hobbling of Nigerian women by wide-flanged anklets. These are commonly given as a wedding present by the father in-law, partly as an ornament and partly to prevent his new relation from running away,
Magic as well as beauty is gener ally the reason for tattooing and painting. The design on the wrist of a Kayan of Borneo prevents the escape of his soul when he is ill, Then women believe that their de signs will serve as torches to guide them on their journey to the next world.
Girls of one tribe are tattooed by degrees all over the body. They believe that if a woman in complete ly tattooed before death ahe will be allowed by the gods to gather the pearls that cover the bed of the mythical river, Telang Julan.. If she is partly tattooed she can at least stand on the bank and watch her more fortunate sisters. But if she has no tattoo modesty will com- pel her to hide in solitary degra dation.
Both tattooing and painting are often the subject of elaborate ceremonies. The maori, for exam ple, becomes so charged with holi ness in the process that he dare not touch his own food and drink lest ho die from the pollution. He must be fed by a retainer and drink through a wooden funnel whose magical carvings will ward off the ill effects of such a mundane action.
Tattooing Degenerating.
In 'Borneo, ne elsewhere in the Pacife, European implementa have led to a loss of manipulative skill, and the art of tattooing has begun to degenerate.
More drastic is the practice of enlarging the lips and cars by the insertion of gradually increasing wooden ornaments. A successful ear operation results in a loop so large that it can be lifted over the victim's head and worn as a human necklaco.
Ferocity rather than beauty is the aim of the Borneo nose orna. ment. But in this, as in all forms of primitive mutilation, magic plays an important part. A fierce appearance is the outward sign of unholy courage, to secure which the hunter will gladly pay the price of a trivial, though painful opera- tion.
MURDER OF SAMPAN
WOMAN.
PRISONERS' REPLY TO
CHARGES.
Statements made by the three Chinese, Yu Sang, Li Sze and Ip Sui Wan, who stand charged with the murder of a sampan woman named Kwok Ching Hui at Cheung Chau on Dec. 17, were "put in evi-" dence when hearing of the case was resumed yesterday in the District Officer's Court before Mr. J. C. MacLaren.

UNSOLVED MYSTERY ON DANISH SHIP.
The mysterious murder on the Danish ship Michael Jebson which brought into the Singapore Har- boar the dead body of a young Chinese towards the end of Inst month still awaits a'solution.
The Michael Jebson was on a voyage from Swatow, China, with three hundred deck passengers bound for Singapore and Bangkok. On the sight of January 20 while the vessel was 16 hours from Singa- pore a member of the crew dis- covered eno of the passengers lying on the deck among some vegetable baskets with a ghastly wound in his stomach.
The ship's surgeon was quickly summoned and the man was attended to.
The wound was stitched and everything possible to ave the man's life was done but he passed away at 11 o'clock, an hour after he was found. All that he could say was that he did not know who stabbed him, that his name was Yang U Lie, and that he was native of the Mui Yang district and twenty years old.
Wife Killed by Communista. An officer on the bridge that night heard no scream and saw nothing. Suspicion turned on a fellow par senger who was found to be insane after the ship had left the China port. This man showed no violence but bemoaned night and day the loss of his young wife who he said had been killed by Communists in China. A member of the crew who was detailed to watch him had left him alone for a few minutes on the night of the tragedy and when he came back to his charge found him gone.
Whilst looking for him he came upon the wounded man. The ship's officers were called and the vessel was scoured from stem to stern but there were no signs of the missing man. It is presumed that he jump ed overboard after committing the outrage.
