SHANGHAI TIRADE AGAINST CONSULAR JURISDICTION.

A well-attended meeting was held in the Chinese General Chamber of Commeres building, North Honan Road, last week, says the N.-C. "It is a serious disgrace to China that extraterritoriality should con- tinue to exist and it is by far a greater disgrace to the nation if the Chinese people permit the continu- ance of extraterritoriality and cons aular jurisdiction...

Foreign Support of Bandits and Smugglers.

"Extraterritoriality is not only an encroachment upon China's sovereignty, and judical rights, but, under its prolection, foreigners are enabled constantly to supply muni- tions to bandits who creato much havoc among the people.

"Do you know how many Chinese under the protection of foreigners are engaged in opium smuggling

enjoying extraterritorial rights in China Countless!

"So long as extraterritoriality is permitted to continue, China's hopes of regaining her judical independ ence and the protecting of lives and properties of her people can never be realized. Let us-rise, therefore, and concentrate our efforts on the abolition of extraterritoriality."

Capt. Callum, who was represent- ed by Mr. O. E. C. Marton, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Addressing his Worship, Mr. Marton said the case raised a point" which concerned all river steamers, as at this time of year large quan- tities of cracker were brought to the Colony from Canton and Macao. Hong Kong was "dis- tributing centre" for all parts of the world as regards the fire cracker trade. Most of the crackers brought down to Hong Kong were not intended for this port at all; and it every river vessel had to fly a red flag and proceed to the Dan- gerous Goods Anchorage every time they carried a few cases of matches or "fire crackers down to Hong Kong, they would have to through
