Detestable Ohanges."

Captain G. S. HeNeil, R. N.R., in command of the Cunarder Mauretania, writing to the Nauti cal Magazine, says:

I understand that various bodies of officers have sat in coun- cil to discuss how these new and detestable changes can be brought about in the safest way, and I have heard of notices which will be put up in the wheelhouse sp that the helmsman will know what to do when he gets the new orders, it being entirely, contrary to his custom (which is stronger than any law) and his instinct.

No doubt at night time these notices will be lit up so that the

the wheel сад them, and when he is told to "wheel to port" it seems that he must give her what his years of custom would call "atarboard helm," and vice versa when he is told to put the "wheel to star- board."

ECO

It must be remembered that the man at the wheel is watching his compass, and when an order is barked out at him from the offi- cer of the watch he will surely do what his custom of years has taught him, which is the contrary thing to what he is is expected to

do.

There is only one safe way, says Captain McNeil, and that is the words "starboard" and "port" must be entirely eliminated and navigators must only use the words "right" and "left."

WIRELESS MONOPOLY

FIGHT.

ANOTHER ATTACK AGAINST RADIO CORPORATION.

Washington. January 13-Mr. Press Wireless, Inc." Joseph Pierson, president of and long chairman of the Newspaper and Press Association Committee which has endeavoured to obtain Press radio channels, told the Interstate Commerce Committee of the Senate to-day that the Radio Corporation of America held a monopoly on radio equipment which prevented wavelengths which the Government Press Wireless from operating, the at last assigned.

Mr. Pierson said that Press Wireless bad received a copy of a Radio Corporation of America con- Corporation representatives and tract which would permit the Radio compel the Press group to surren der its own patent rights, paying a. 5 per cent, royalty on gross re- any equipment which might be rent- ceipts and a 5 per cent, proft an

ed from Radio Corporation.

All of this, according to Mr. Pierson. is intended to compel Prees Wireless to "make the Press. a colony of the eleeric and power empire which seems to be grasping. after complete control of the water and air of the United States,"

Several attacks have been made on the Radio Corporation of late, one of the major complaints being in connection with contracts which compelled use of Radio Corporation. equipment. The Radio Corpora tion holds an important basic radio tube patent in this connection and assailants of the corporation de clare that this patent is antedated by a similar earlier invention in Possession of the Navy Department Efforts have been made to cause the Navy Department to press. its claims and break the Radio Cor- poration patent rights but Navy officials declined to comply with this desire.
