NOTES.

Chinese cigarette manufacturers are doing" badly, due to the keen competition by foreign merchants, and to the increased number of Chinese manufacturers. They are making no profits.

*

Silversmiths are doing fairly well, as their wares are in great do- mmand. They have received many orders. Intely for trophies, medals, vasce, and articles suitable for wedding presents.

On account of the cold spell, there has been a very brisk demand for overcoats, and tailors are doing quite well. As a result, the price. of thick velvet for overcoats has risen by about sixty cents per yard.

The value of the Central Bank of China netes has been restored to nor- mal, and the notes are accepted at full face value in business transac tions by many merchants,

Dealers in motor-cars, trucks, etc. are doing exceedingly well, and many of them have made good pro fits. With the progress of the con struction of motor roads in the city and highways in the country die tricts, automobiles have been is grent demand. Bus companies espe cially are doing well.

The cotton-yarn market was dead during the week-end, both wholesale and retail business being lacking. Quotations however were unchanged, as stocks were exceedingly short. Shanghai telegraphic advices in- dicate that quotations for fine by yarns of No. 32 and 42 rose about a dollar për bale, and that of No. 20 by about fifty cents.
