Seeing a friend with his arm in a.sling the other day, I naturally asked him what had happened. He said he was out to dinner at a well-known mees the previous night, and somebody tred on his hand. Queer table-manners some young bachelors have!

Four men had just settled down! to a rubber of bridge, and were in the midst of bidding when the boy] came in and handed one a tele. STEID.
"Excuse me," said the recipient, Ho scanned, the message, and then looked up.
"An old aunt of mine has just died," he said. "Two hearts." Ilis partner looked shocked. "My dear fellow," he said, "I'm surprised at the light way you re- ceive this painful news. Surely

It is very comforting to know that the high moral tona of the Colony has not eunk so low as to Sun- condone football
games on days. There was such a. match a couple of weeks ago, but it was due to a misunderstanding. What the the misunderstanding, was world is not told, but apparently those responsible for arranging the eyent had not received one of those beautiful calendars which are being so generously distributed all round the town. In other words, they didn't know that January 3 was a Sunday,
Why no fuss should be made about playing golf, tennis, base bal and cricket on Sundays, while

Come in, old man if you just whistle it over I'll soon pick it up?"
And while on the subject of music. the other night, at a party, I heard a song with so delicate an air, and such a melting refrain, that I cannot resist the temptation to pass it on to a palpitating pub- Tic. I was assured by the singer. an elderly gentleman, that the song is not a new one--in fact, I under- stand it is many, many years old but to me, and doubtless to others, it came as a welcome change in this jazz-ridden age
With this preamble, permit me to plunge forthwith into:
The Ballade of THE SENTIMENTAL PAWNDROXER. (To a well-known Irish air.)
Oh, a poor little maiden, her eyes
wet with tears,

"Take this." "Well, what

my dolly."
Refrain:-
"My father's

mother in ill, And there's no one to help them
but Polly,.
So lend me some money, I know
that you will, And that's why I brought you my
dolly."
Let us pause for a moment, and conjure up this truly touching scene. Is is Monday morning, not in Addenbrooke's, but in much less exalted circles. The usual dregs of humanity are gathered together on their weekly visit to Uncle." There is the hard-working lady
fixed look el purpose in her eye. not a regular customer-and with a with quiet dignity, "ignoring the customers' laughter and jeere," she marches up to the granite-faced and steely-ayed shopman, who idly toying with his diamond senrf pin, and makes her plea, "Wi. you lend me some meney. I know that you will?”"

With a ech in his throat, he said,
Polly,
Will I lend you some money,
you know that I will, "But, really, I can't take your

(The refrain is then repeated, with minor variations.)
...
This might truly be termed the Triumph of Innocence. Note how the shopman, bound by the habit of years, pauses for a moment in doubt, and then, overcome by pity, and with a tear in his eye-the first since his boyhood-he fumbles in his purse for a coin. Not onl that, but
moment of really sublime charity, he makes it two! Not many pawnbrokers would do that! How we wish they would.
