ANNUAL REVIEW
OF
IMPORT AND EXPORT BUSINESS,
Shipping,
finance,
&c.
In the absence of any official statistics of the import and export trade in the Colony, we give below the views of various business-men regarding trade conditions during the past year. We take this opportunity of thanking those who have kindly provided us with the information on which these reports are based, and for the willing co-operation shown in preparing what we hope will be found an interesting and informative review. DULL BUSINESS YEAR.
The general tone of the pices goods business for 1920 has been Inr from good." These words suin- marise the position of the trade for the year under review,
To begin with piece-goods orders, Dooked in 1028, when they reached the Colony this year, were found to be higher priced than the goods which were still in stock. British piece goods had to compete with serious rival in Japan, and the market during the earlier part of the season was more or less "flood- ed" there icing enough "epot" cargo availabic to meet all de- mands.
As a result of this state of affairs no further orders were passed an to British manufacturers from Hong Keng during the summer months of 1929. To add further to the tron- ble, the civil strife between the various Chinese factions made huai- Less with the interior very difficult, and the volume of business in July and August was very small.
The season for booking orders for piece-goods during the second half of the year is November and December, but this year only very small orders have been placed, this being due to the unfavourable tute of exchange prevailing. Only goods hooked at high exchange can he sold in this market.
According to one informant. Bri- tish goods still lead in the Hong Kong market. although Japanese Foods, by reason of lower price and quicker delivery, are proving a springs rival for the businces. Frem another source, however, a different impression is given, as will be seen below. The local re- quirements in the way of piece- goods is exceptionally mall, most
very
boycott was not generally adopted, some business was done all the time in Japanese piece-goods.
With all these drawbacks, natur ally the volume of business done during the year must be small, actually being very much less than in 1028. The price of piece-goods obtaining locally has also gone down about ten per cent. since the beginning of the year.

COTTON YARN.
SPECULATION LEADS TO HIGH PRICES.
RUSH TO TUNNAN.
There has been little doing in the Colony in cotton yarns this year, according to a report made by a firm dealing principally in Shang- hai yarns.
The position of the market has At the close of 1990 dealers find been influenced both by gambling there is plenty of stock in the mar- and by the political situation in ket, and the godowns are still full China. From August to November enough to cope with the demand speculators had been buying up all without further orders being placed the available yarn, so that the mills with anufacturers. When the ex-in China are showing a good this change began to drop, the market-profit, and by reason of price for spot goode showed a corner" holders of cotton yarn slight advance, but slowly receded are also making a handsome profit again, so that, at the close of the out of their holdings. year, in fate of the low exchange, there been no advance in the price to th” piece-goods.
The announcement that tho authorities at Yunnan will in future collect their taxes in silver instead Inhecember stendy demand of in paper money, has resulted in a rush of cotton yarn to Yunnan, arose for Japanese, piece-goods, and. while one could not say there is dealers being anxious to get in be- any netual shortage, there is suffers the new regulations. come into ficient inquiry to warrant a alight force, which will be on January 1. rise in the price of the Japanese About 10,000 bafes, it is learned, have been shipped to Yunnan, and product.
towards the end of the year the position is strong, since all spot stock has been cleared. Even Bombay yarn has bera bought up the rush to The hoom, however, ap entirely to meet Yunnan. pears to have subsided, and within the last few days business has sinckened again, though only "tem porarily, it is believed.

It will he noted that there figures do not bear out the statement made by another merchant (quoted above) that British goods lead the market.
LINEN AND GRASS CLOTH.
In former years quite a big busi ness was done by Hong Kong firms in these lises, the demand for linen and grass cloth coming mainly from America, but this year business has not been very good, and it is under- stood that exporters in Swator are bringing down their prices.
