The Christmas Meeting of Fanling Steeplechases was marred by the death of the best steeplechaser on the course, Ace of Spades breaking his neck following a tumble, and dying on the course. His jockey, Mr. R. H. Charles, was severely thrown, but fortu- nately not badly injured, although at one time it was lear he was suffering from serious concussion. The nature of his fall is dealt with below.

Ji

Montana won the December Plate quite easily and has proved himself to be the best paay over the sticks. He will be a worthy successor to Ace of Spades.

The United Services Christmas Cup was won by Mr. Matting- A cup was duly pre- ley's Fire Call, ridden by Mr. Churchill. sented to Mr. Mattingley and Mr. Stanton was also presented

which Montana won. with the cup,

Dividends were fairly good, favourites and outsiders sharing the honours. The attendance was also quite good, but the freezing. weather out at Kwanti, coupled with the chilly and heavy winds robbed the afternoon's sport of much of its pleasure.

The special train arrangements were somewhat put out by the return train, which was delayed an hour en route, due, it is be lieved to engine trouble. As a result the train stenmed into Kowloon station at 7.95 instead of 6.25 as scheduled.

ACE OF SPADES.

This pony started in the principle race of the day where his only serious rival was Montana. The two ponies get away together, but Ace of Spades was not jumping in his usual free and easy way, and "clicked" every hurdle as he passed; losing ground at every stride to Montana. He cleared the water jump, but at the next hurdle, he caught the horizontal with his fore lege and tumbled head foremost to the ground, breaking his neck in the process. and dying almost instantaneously.

Mr. Charles, who was riding, did not get up and it was fear- ed at first that he was seriously injured, but after he was "moved. in an ambulance to the jockeys' room, it was found that he was suffering from slight concussion and that he would soon be wel! and about again. This is indeed fortunate, as Mr. Charles would be badly missed in racing circles if he were unable to rido during the next month or so.

Ace of Spades was undoubtedly the best 'chaser at Kwanti for the last year or so. Racing under Mr. Shillington's colours and ridden by that owner, he was never defeated and under his new ownership (Mr. Ulster) he was beaten. I think, only once, when conceding a good deal of handicap. He has won all the import- aut events at Fanling and died like a true hero-in the field,
