for ovn FILM CRITIC.]

If you did not go to the Queen's- yesterday, book a seat as soon possible for "Bulldog Drummond." The film has many things to recom- mand it, an exciting and well told story, good acting, and some Eng lish and near-English voices. The Edery you probably know. "Sapper" has made Bulldog Drummond famous in novel and drama and the film version approximates fair ly closely to that acted by the A.D.O. last year, except of course in that the medium offers an op portunity for more convincing ffects. It is enough to say that Drummond is a demobilised' officer. in search of adventure, who gets entangled with an unscrupulous Haag, who have a lovely girl in their

power.

The first crook drama which we heard here on the talkies was Alibi." which gave an excellent

word to the films. Good as "Ålibi” was, it was spoilt for many people by its unnecessary horrors and overwhelming Americanism. Now

getBulldog Brummond" a story in the inain of English prople, written by an Englishmann. Though it has many points of con- tact with Alibi," the difference is that where Alibi" made an ap peal to the spirit of cruelty and love of borrors, Bulldog Drum Bend" appeals simply to that of adventure. Horrors there are, but they are mostly executed off," and excitement is, of a healthy and Jegitimate order.

Not the least pleasing part of the film is the excellent singing in the film. I hope that Hollywood will give this body of singers plenty more similar work to do.

Ronald Coleman acts well, and en clearly heard. His voice has a decidedl American timbre but it is still an English voice for all that. I am sorry I can't remember the names of ither of the two Indier, for sutne reason the manage- mone has given up printing the runes of the cast in the pro- gramme which I think is a great pity. Both these ladies acted "well, Irma" over acted somewhat, but she had a not too easy part, Phyllis was delightful. The whole east was good, and the in- evitable comic Englishman #11 American films, the "Algy " of Sapper's story, was really very amusing, though I do not think his original creator. would recognise him.

YOUNG SHIPBUILDER'S NEW MODEL.

ASAMA MARU PRESENTED TO THE N.Y.K.

A model of the N.Y.K, steamer Asama Maru, one of the grent motorships of the Pacific, has been completed by Master Jerry Silva, the fourteen-year-old son of Mr. J.

A. B. Silva, of 1, Austin Avenue,

Kowloon. The Asama Mare is now on her maiden voyage and is due here on Monday.

Accompanied by his father. Mr. A. C. Botelho and Dr. E. L. de Souza, the ind visited the N.Y.K. offices yesterday and presented the model to the manager. Mr. S. Kinoshita received the party and both he and the members of his staff were struck by the young builder's ingenuity and clever work- manship. The manager nccented the gilt with thanks, complimenting Master Silva, who, he thought, should be given, every encourage. ment in entering a big shipbuilding yard.

Prior to this visit, the model was taken to Kowloon Docks for inspec tion by Mr. R. M, Dyer. After look- ing at it, Mr. Dyer was so pleased that he offered employment to Master Silva in the drawing offion. Dr. de Souza pointed out that tho' Ind was still attending school, whereupon the offer was left open.

It is understood that, the model was copied from a picture post-card rather hurriedly and without inter- fering with his studies. Master Silva has a big fent of some sixty melele which are the wonder of bis friends and often the subject of praise from members of shipping. circles.
