MESSRS, ULLMANN'S SHANGHAI ROBBERY.
BAGDANOFF'S ADMISSION IN COURT.
HOW THE POLICE SHADOWED THE ACCUSED,
WORK OF A DESPARATE ĠANG?
Shanghai, Nov. 2:--Further hearing in connection with the jewellery robbery of Messrs. Ullmann & Co., took place at the Provisional Court this afternoon when police evidence was called which brought to light previous suspicion cast on the accused, of crime.
After Mr. Blum, manager of the shop, had told the court how he had found the store upon his arrival, two watchmen were called upon to give evidence in which they stated that two of the accused. Vladmir A. Begdanoff and Kalman Gelman with woman were seen loitering near the jewellery store before the robbery.
The two accused and Anastasis Kutibeahova, the latter a woman, were not cross-examined, but were asked if the property which was found in the conl-shed, separated from the store by two walls which the robbers had holed, was their property. All three replied in the nexative.
It will be remembered that Boris Stepanoff who makes the last men ber. of the alleged gang, gave the poliec a written statement in which he admitted participating in. the crime, and that Bagdanoff who was working alone in the coal-shed in making a hole in the walls and stealing the jewellery, had given him the loot to hide in a creck off Lincoln Road, in the Western dis- trict.
The case was heard before Judge Wong and Mr. Herberty, Senior Consul's Deputy. Mr. Winter pro- secuted and Dr. Wilhelm and Mr. Luchich appeared for the accused,
Mr. Blum's 'Evidence.

Mr. Winter made an application to hand the jewellery back to the complainants as the Insurance Co. had pressed them for this trans- ference.
Det.-Supt. Conduit stated that on the arrival of the police investiga tions were made and numerous articles word discovered in the coal shed which had been left by the thieves.
D.-S. Conduit showed the court numerous short iron bars which were sharpened at the ends, three pairs of gloves." Six, bottles, be said which had contained water were found, with 9 battery cells. The most important evidence which was found was a pull-over, which the police claim to be identical with the ong worn in the picture of one of the accused on his pass-port. This picture was enlarged by the fingerprint bureau and handed to the court. Det-Supt. Conduit said that Bagdanoff had already admitt- ed that the pull-over was his own property.
Dr. Wilhelmi objected to this evidence saying that the client did not plead guilty before the police bad treated him badly.
When the judge asked the accus ed in question if the pull-over was his, he said it was not. The judge reminded him that he had confess ed that it was his, and after ques tioning him further the accused ad- mitted that it was his property.
