PUBLICITY STUNT. ENDS IN TRAGEDY.
GRAVE WITH A CHIMNEY.
Paris-Kidnapped and buried alive, at Verneuil in a grave with a chimney in order to ensure slow death by starvation was the fate of Marquis de Champaubert alias Clement Passal (an ex-convict), which has just been revealed in an anonymous letter to Passal's mo- ther from one of his friends who
haunted by a vision, decided to risk my own life; in order that Passal may be rescued by giving the exact spot where I buried him.' A detailed map of the spot was enclosed.
The police feverishly dug and found a rough coffin in which lay Passal. There was a small amount of chocolate and a brickclay pipe was let into the coffin and extend- cd upwards to the air,

aver,
A post-mortem examination, how. resulted in a verdict of asphyxia being recorded as the pipe was inadequate to ventilate.
Le Matin has received, since Sept. 20, a series of letters signed "Knights of Themis," declaring that Passal was mad as he did not show the slightest emotion or re- sistance when being buried.
The crime is attributed to Pas- sal's ex-accomplices, as an act of re- venge, due to the fact that he had been liring quietly with his mo ther since he completed five years' imprisonment for attempted rob bery.
Publicity Stunt.
It is generally believed that the fantastic story of Passal is merely a publicity stunt for the forthcom ing publication of his memoirs. The tragic ending of the adven- ture was presumably due to the fact that there was only one pipe and an absence of draught allow- ed the carbonic acid, gas to remain at the bottom of the coffin. But it is not clear why his accomplices failed to disinter him as soon as he failed to reply to their caila.
A letter from the "Knights of Themis," received by Le Matin on September 28, states that a woman, self-styled Madame Dorgeval, form- ed that society and wrote to Pas- The Band will parade in mufti at 5.30 p.m. nt Headquarters on publication of his memoirs and sal in prison with regard to the Friday, November 1, to make good drove him from prison to Verneuil, any deficiencies in kit.
