The system of Travellers' Cheques wie originated in 1891 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form' of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques. under the trade name of AMERICAN EXPRESS, TRAVELERS' CHEQUES' the word "Travellers' being spoiled with one "1".
