CRICKET.

INTERPORT TRIAL.

A two days trini was begun on Saturday last on the Club ground. Hancock had kept on his side, Dawker, Parker, E. B. Reed and Stanion to basi ut most of the " possible" bats, under " Owen Hughes, whose side batted first. | Major Crake and Anderson started to Bowker and Reed. Crake got a four off Bowker's first ball, Ander-i son a four from Reed, and then no thing happened for a long time. At. Anderson was caught at the wicket off Bowker. Fincher never settled down and fell to Brace bowled apparently off his pad. "Reed had been bowling very steadily and should have had Crake caught at second slip when bis score was -eighteen. An expensive mistake. and very hard lines on Reed who had worked the whole over to get the particular shot made. The same player appeared to be put down off Reed at mid-off later, but it was a tremendously hot chance. Next ball 'Goldman pushed one up in the air and was easily taken at the wicket.

Reynolds came in and an excel lent stand ensued. Crake was evi dently having trouble with the light which made him play too soon and lift the ball a bit. The fielding was decidedly off-colour and Parker had a lot of hard luck with chances that! went adrilt. Stanion went on at the Law Courts end but he ran into Crake when well sot, and was punished for three fours and a six in his first over, the batsman pass ing his fifty with the six

* A Second Stand.

After these two men had added ¦ · eighty runs Crake was taken by Pearce well round from mid-off, from Parker who had gone on at the Naval Yard end. But Owen Hughes, who succeeded settled down rapidly after being dropped at the wicket first ball, or so I am told! The chance was not apparent in the seor ing box. Reynolds retired at 183 after a very well played knock of Ty in which there was some very powerful driving. W. D. Folley then came in. He is a new bat to me. Ile has a nice correct style bat did at get very much of the bowling and when he did he seemed to have a lot of difficulty in getting it away, Owen Hughes retired at, 5 p.m. after a dashing 81.

Big Hitting.

Maxwell came in at 5.15 to play the breeziest innings of the after- noon. He hit with tremendous power and soon overtook Folley, At 284 the latter, in hooking a long hop of Bowker's had the misfortune to get it on his thumb and gave Zimmern a simple 'catch at the wicket. He had only made twelve but I think is going to be heard of agnia in local cricket. Maxwell continued to score all round the wicket, but Richardson failed and Hung, after a pretty four to leg, was.b.w. trying to force Bowker away to leg. With the last man in Maxwell still required six runs to complete his fifty, but he made sure į of it by hitting. Parker almost into the Deputy Registrar's Office! Reid was bowled just after, leaving Max- well not out with 55 made in leas than fifty minutes.

Bowling Annlysis.

Q. M. R. W.

It was remarked pretty freely that, so far the game may have! taught us that we have more batting! than we thought, but that it has "confirmed our worst fears about our bowling. To my mind our catching is much more worrying. The nam- ber of catches put down by people, whom one regarded as having a per- fectly safe pair of hands, is per- Esctly appalling. The wicket was dead easy and gave the bowlers no help, and if they did not get their catches taken I don't sre. how you can expect them to get wickets. Bowker bowled better but he has got to eliminate all that leg stuff: before be can be considered "any- thing like a probable. I'm afraid he has got to the stage where ho can't change. ns there is no doubt that if he sacrificed a yard of pace to greater accuracy of pitch and direction he would still be our best bowlar. You are not going to frighten Interporters out on the new wicket. Brace would be a bundred per cent, more useful if he bowled more at the wicket and less at the batsman. Reed is the best length

The R.E. and Signals started their bowler we have to-day, but he has abominable luck. I imagine Han league programme in fire style, cock was devoting more care to scoring a decisive victory over the trying out his bowlers thoroughly than to getting the opposition out on Saturday I feel pretty sure that even in two days cricket shock stactics will pay best. Noble's book on the recent Tests describes the way in which Chapman used his Bowlers very clearly.

Of the batting, it is clear that Crake and Reynolds will be certain tics for the side. Maxwell is a dis. turbing bat, but I should like to isee how he tackles a good slow 1bowler. (Unfortunately we haven't one.) Owen Hughes has come into Bis proper form and if he can re- cover his confidence in the slips should be a certainty. But with the bowling at our command, it is ob vious we cannot give away a run in the field. Today's cricket is going to be very interesting from several points of view::

The game starts again at 11 am. this morning.
