STRANGE DEATH OF A CONCUBINE.
PLAYS CARDS AND TAKES POISONED CUP,
BREW OF POISONOUS LEAVES.
An inquest into the death of a young Chinese woman who took a fatal dose of poison on August 15, was held yesterday afternoon, a atrange story being told by the deceased's husband.
Mr. T, S. Whyte Smith acted as Coroner, the inquiry being held at the Kowloon Magistrary.
Mr. V. C. Braneome, Government Analyst, waid that he teated a "bottle of leaves sent to him by the police and certifed them to be a wellknown form of Chinese poi. onous leaves, known as Tai Char Fip. Witness said that the leaves was scarce on the leland but plenti ful on the mainland. It was a well-known poison, and recorda showed that it was used na far hack as
1874 in a murder case. There were similar cares in 1994,- 1918 and aguia quite recently. Witness read an extract from, a book by Dr. Stewart who said that the leaf was extremely poisonous and well known to the Chincee."
Evidener of the post mortem was given by Dr. J. E. Dovey. He said that the deceased's body was healthy and free of any disease,
The Husband's Story.
The husband of the deceased said that he lived At Shum Sha Po, and was a telephone operator | nt Government House. On the evening of August 18, he eturned to his fat in Lai, Chi Kok Read at about 5 p.m. and on eater- ing the Aat he saw his concubine who had just woke up after a sleep. He asked if supper WLA rendy and on heing told that it' was not, he suggested that she should prepare it. This was done and he and his' concubine and no amah sat down to the meni, Shortly afterwards, his wife came home with the son and they joined them at the table.
Decoused Suggests Visit to Cinema. It was suggested that they should go to the cinema and his con. cubine dressed to go out.. As it was early the concubine suggested a game of mah chenk, but as the others did not want to play, she asked witness to play "fishing" (a Chincee card game) with her. They had not been doing this for long when she remarked that she was not feeling well and would like same leung char (cooling tea- used by the Chinese like aspirin). Witness told her to go out and buy some. She replied that she bad some in the house and got up to prepare it. She went into the kitchen and later returned and con.. tinued the card game. Meanwhile. she sent her amsh out to buy some sugar.

When the amah returned, the went into the Kitchen and brought back a large mug-ful of the medi- cinal tea and added the sugar, She then put the mug into a basin of cold water, and continued play- ing cards,"
Witness said that the deceased got up and drank half of the tea and put down the cup. He thea picked it up and said that he would drink the reat. She immedi ately etopped him and cried. "Dont, it is Tai Char Yip" Witness asked what she meant, He and she replied
poison," became alarmed and called his wife and other people in the flat. He asked the deceased why she had takon the poison. but she only answered."Nothing, nothing."
Continuing, witness anid that they attempted to force her to drink cooking oil" as an emetic, but the refueed and knocked the bottle out of their hands. Witness then ran to the Police Station and telephoned for a doctor,
