OLDHAM ATHLETIC SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT.
SOUTHEND LOSE SOUTHERN SECTION LEAD,
RANGERS DETHRONED.
Leeds United strengthened, their position at the head of the First Division in the English League by a victory at Sunderland. while their two nearest competitors, Arsenal and Middlesbrough. lost one point in their away matches.
Sheffield Wednesday, the
champicas, defeated Burnley on their own ground and came up close to the leaders.
Oldham Athletic, Second Division leaders, lost. full points ou Saturday playing at Southampton. This was their first reverse, as Stoke they had previously lost only two points in drawn games. followed up their earlier victory in the week by getting another point from Notts County, which has elevated them to second place. Swindon played their Southern Section match at honie instead of away, beating Merthyr six goals to three. Plymouth Argyle's victory placed them above Southend at the top, the latter having a draw with Fulham. The lowly placed Torquay had a 52 victory at Brighton. Port Vale's advance in the Northern Section wAS marked by another conquest over Nelson. Stockport and Tranmere, their nearest rivals, were both defeated.
Scottish League match realis provided the downfall of the leaders and the rise of Aberdeen to the premier pince. The charu- pions were beaten by the Hearts and it was their second defeat. A score of 7-0 was returned by Celtic in their meeting at home with Falkirk.

GARRISON CHAPLAINS' CHALLENGE CUP,
The Arst annual race for this cup was rowed over a course of 1,000 yard of Stonecutters East, on October . There being no rowing event between the annual races for the Brown and, Ah King Cups held in April, this race was origianted with a view to encouraging new crews to avail themselves of the facilities for rowing, provided by Hong Kong Harbour, which are unrivalled by any other Garrison at bome or abroad.
The donors of the cup, whose names are inscribed thereon; are the Rev. C. Scott Little 3.0.F., Rev. J. J. Hodgins, C.F., Rev. F. C. Young, O.C.F.

Eight crews entered for the con- test, the draw producing the follow- ing beats:-
HEAT 10th Heavy Battery RA
RE. & R.C. Sigs. B. Coy. E.0.8.B. H.Q. Wing S.L.I. The start of this, as well as of the 2nd heat scan showed with what keeness the crews had trained.
H.Q.. Wing SL.I. early took the lead and retaining it, finished first, being followed by 20th Heavy Bty. who took 2nd place. The remain- ing crews, undaunted by the lead of the others hung, on "gamely to the end. Time: 4 min., 93 secs.

C. Coy. B.LL.
21st Heavy Bty, R.A. 12th Heavy Bly. R.A. This race provided a tremendous struggle for the first two places, and left the spectators in doubt up to the cad, when 31st H. Bty, R.A. gained the first place closely fol- lowed by C. Coy. S.L.I. who wrest- cl that position from 12th H. Bty. R.A. by a smalt margin.
A. Coy. K.0.8.B. although out- paced rowed a hard race to the finish. Time: 4 min., 2 seca.
