-New York, September 22-AsĮ nese and English. frosty weather nipped players in several of the "big league," cities to-day, three hard-fought contests went to 10, innings and there was a general tendency to make the season-closing games hard ones.
The pennant winners in both cir cuits took beatings by a margin of one point in each case, Washington winning from the Athletics 7-8 and New York from the Cubs 8-t. This hurt the leaders' percentages, bring- ing Philadelphia to 1000 and Chicago to .055, but made no difference on the championship, outcome and gave valuable players' lay-off in anti- cipation of the World Series.
The Senators seemed due to romp all over the Athletics up to the ninth inning, when four Philadel- phin runs tied the score at 6-6. This proved unavailing, however, for the Senators brought over the winning tally in the "tenth. The weather was genuinely cold in Washington.
In the first White Sox-Yankee games of a double-header, Reynolds of the White Sox made a home run and so did Durst" of the Yankeea, Chicago winning 7-4. Sherid, in the second game, held the White Sox to five hits and also drove in two runs, helping the Yanks to win by
3-1 score,
The Tigers shut out the Browns 3-0 by keeping the St. Louis hits scattered. St. Louis made seven hits to Detroit's eight.
Cleveland's Indians scored three runs in the tenth inning of the game with Roston, after the Red Sox had scored two in the ninth to tie the score at 44. Boston made three errors.
Rogers Hornsby, stimulated by frosty breezes of the Chiengo lake front, whacked his thirty-eighth. home run of the "season in to-day's Cubs Giants set-to. Cuyler, speedy Chicago right-fielder, stole bis for- tieth base of the senson,
Aside from these high-lights, the contest was Estless. New York was 0-4, with the aid of a home run by Terry.
In the first Brooklyn-St. Louis game, Herman of the Dodgers and Gelbert of the Cardinals made home runs aur Brooklyn romped in an casy winner, 72 The second game was n 4-0 shut-out-in favour of the Cardinals.
Playing the Phillies at Cincinnati, the Reds scored one run ju the ninth innings to tie the score at 2-2 and then pushed over the winning run in the tenth inning.
