MID-WEEK REPORT.
Messra. Harry O. Odell & Co., stock and share brokers, report:-
China Providenta, Hotels, Ropes and Cements have come in for a great deal of attention at rising prices in a market which has shown practically an all-round improve ment during the week.
Ewes had a smart rise to Tis. 19.05 but closed easier, with buyers offering Ta 10 Other Shanghai cotton stocks remained more or less unchanged.
Banks.--Have buyers at $1,223 and can probably also be placed nt $1,230.
Canton Insurance.-Are quiet at $€30.
H.K. Fire-Are wanted at $750 and have sellers at $735.
Unions. Are in demand at 8331 and more will have to “be paid to secure shares.

According to mail advices from New York, the present aspect of the situation would seem to indicate a period of narrow price fluctuations until appearance of more definite crop information. Manufacturers are making new purchases very cau tiously although there is a good on- quiry for future shipment.
It is reported that the Japanese Government estimates a decrease of 3.4 per cent, in the Spring crop as compared with last year,

this year especially by German merthanta. The average price is about sixty dollars (Hong Kong). per pieul às compared with twenty dollars last year. Recently, the authorities have decided to put an export tax on the ore and on this account, very large quantities have been arriving in the city during the Init few days. As supplies are abundant, prices have dropped to less than fifty dollars.
ANGLO-JAVA RUBBER.
PROFITS COMPARATIVELY
HIGHER.
A comparative advance in earn- ings is shown by the report of the Anglo-Java Rubber and Produco Company for the 15 months ended March 31, 1929. The proft was £140,007, as compared with 284,758 for the previous 12 months to the end of 1927.
It is intended that the company's financial year shall end on March 31, in future instead of at the end of December, it being stated in the prespectous issued in January last that the new
estates - purchased would not be transferred much be fore March, 1924,

Deducting £82,148 as interest and trustees' fees in connection with the £1,000,000 Seven per cent, Conver tible Debenture stock issued in January, 1928, and £7,000 placed to buildings and machinery reserve, there is an available balance of £63,738, which includes £11,919 SroCK: brought in.
From this the directors récom- mend a dividend of 5 per cent., less tax, on the issued Ordinary share capital of £338,075, as in- ereased by the issue in January, 1928, of 3,600,000 s, shares. This would leave £26,504 to be carried forward.
In the previous financial period £63,209 was transferred from re- serve and added to proâta, from which £10,563 was allocated to "Dutch income-tux, £10,070 to re- serve and £31,946 transferred to in- vestiment account. An interim divi- dend of 7 per cent. and a final of 17 per cent. (making 2 per cent., less tax, for the year) on a capital of £378,075 was paid, absorbing £94,660.
