ROMANCE OF THE

MARY ASTOR FILM AT THE QUEEN'S.

[BY OUR FILM CRIrio.]

Tea

There have been many films which profess to be romances of the underworld of New York, and the one bearing that name, now to be seen at the Queen's, is much of a muchness with its predeces-

Fors.

There are all the familiar figures. The bad and the not-quite-so-bad crooks, the fat and the thin ladies of easy virtue who are their com panions, the sleepy-eyed detective with very unprofessional ways, the lovely helpless heroine, and the wealthy young man who eventually marries her,

None of the names on the pro- gramme except that of the star, Mary "Astor, are well known, but I do not think the film the, worse for that. Very often A lesser lumicary shines inore brightly in a second rate picture than a 'genuine star can take the trouble to do, and in this case the whole cast attains a very fair measure of skill, Mary Astor, however, needs, if she is to give her best, more support than eho can get from Ben Bard (the villain), Eobert Elliott (the 'sleuth), or John Boles (the hero).

The story breaks away from tradition in the fact that the hero and heroine are married about half way through, though of course they did not live happily ever after," that would be far too unromantic, Mary Astor makes a very prepos sessing waitress, and perhaps too prepossessing a secretary and goes

trinla through her various.

very prettily: Romance of the Under- world is not a first rate film but it is quite interesting and moves well.
