INDO-CHINA COAL.

DEMAND IMPROVED.

Improvement in the Shanghai market is reported by the import ers of Indo-Chinese coal as the end of summer approaches. The mur- ket for Japanese coal on the other hand, is still feeling the effects of unfavourable exchange. Local in terest is centered on the contract for 100,000 tons of coal required by the Shanghai Power Co., tenders for which are to be opened on September 10,

Demand for speedier traffic across the Atlantic has not been so evident since the earlier part of the nine teenth century. At that time the re- cord was held by the German liners, Kaiser Wilhelm End, and Krop Prinzessin Cecile, both of which were seized by the United States upon entry into the war, Ships of the Cunard Line, Lusitania" and Mauretania, answered the challenge and the former won the crown in 1908. In 1910, the Mauretania, in crossing from Queenstown, Ireland, to New York in four days, ten hours and forty-one minutes led The Mauretania held the title un- til the Bremen's victory. Not only did the Bremen beat the Maure tania, but she won with case in a run that is a clearcut beating over anything that has been tried be fore.
