Gidden died in the Royal Ports- mouth Hospital from a perforation of an intestinal ulcer the day after being transferred from the Minis try's hospital.
It was alleged at previous hear- ings by patients of the Ministry's hospital that Gidden, when being removed by orderlies at the hospit al on June 10 to the ward for ment al cases was frogmorched, and was kicked in the stomach by one of the staff. The allegations were denied by witnesses on the staff of the institution.

Sir Thomas in his summing-up to the jury, said :-
Some of the evidence in the case has been very contradictory, and every conceivale point of view has been disclosed.
Gidden, after his demobilisa- tion, was treated in various mental institutions. It has been proved that he was a mental patient, but whatever he might have been he had a claim to be fairly and kindly treated.
Good Behaviour.
Sir Thomas then dealt in detail with the events leading up to the day on which Gidden was alleged to have been illtreated. Gidden, Imposing a fine of $100 or two months' imprisonment on Mr. C.
