Novemeysky and Mr. T. G. Tulloch on behalf of the concessionaires. It was the result of negotiations be gun in 1921. The matter was fre quently discussed in the House of Commons, and the late Covera- ment's proposals met with consider- able opposition. The French group now urge that their pre-war con- ccasion has been within the Gov. ernment cognisance for many years, and has been the subject of numer ons conferences and negotiations."

Tenders Invited,

From the statement given to the Central News on behalf of the French group, it would appear that before the war three Ottoman subjects were granted a concession by the Ministry of Forests and Mines over a considerable-area of in land on the east side of the Dead Sea. In April, 1923, the, the concession passed to the bacids of a group of Englishmen, who in- mediately took steps to have the concession recognised by the Govern ment. This question had been un- der discussion by the Colonial Office for three years when the Gotern- ment decided to ask for tendors.

The concession being a monopoly there was a keen contest for it, and

tenders came from the three groups. These were rejected as unsatisfne- tory. The matter dragged on until 1021 without any decision, and then the English group sold the concessions to a powerful French group for a considerable sum. The English group stated that they were reluctant to take this course, but were obliged to do so because they bad failed to obtain Government re cognition. In the absence of such: recognition they could have në legal claim against the Government, and

in these circumstances they sold out..

Undue preference in making the May agreement is alleged by the French group, who have appealed to the Hague.

A company is now in course of formation, to be known as the Dead Sea Development Company, to work the concession, of which Lord Lyt ton is chairman. A period of twelve months has been allowed for the formation of the company, and it is provided that all disputes up- der it are to be submitted to arbi- tration. The concessionaires were granted exclusive rights for 25 years to extract mineral sat from the Dead Sen, and at the end of that period first 'option on any pro-, posed further concession.

Dead Sea Chemicals.

Some conception of the value of the chemical resources of the Dead Sea may be gained from the fact that the estimated quantities of salts deposited there are:

Millions of metric tons.. Potassium chloride ....... 4,000 Magnesium bromide ...

Sodium chloride Magnesium chloride

980

11,900 92,000

Calcium chloride......... 8,000 It is also said that the supply of potash may be considered inex haustible.

Experimental opers. tions are at present proceeding on the concession.

*Reuter's Agency understands: that the facts of the case areas. follow:-

The British Government has Rover admitted the validity of this pre-war claim. France has now asked Great Britain if the latter is ready to submit the question to the Hague Court, and correspon. dence on the subject is still proceed- ing. The French Government was informed as far back as April, 1923 of the reason for which HM. Government were unable to recog. nise the validity of the concession, A note on the subject from the French Ambassador in London was received at the Foreign Oes. in April, to which a reply has been sent. A statement on the subject' was made by Bir Austen Chamber- isin in Parliament on February 13 last, and some weeks later Mr. Amery, in reply to a question, said be had nothing to add to the reply previously given by the Foreign Becretary
