NOTES.

Some 170 bales of raw silk were #bld on Monday. The quotations were:-No 14/16 at H.K.8040 and 13/15 Best I at 8005.

*

*

Some 1,912 hales' of raw silk and 103 bales of ravelled silk were exported between the 10th and 20th instant (elusive) and some 534 packages of wolfram on Monday.

.

The rice market in Hong Kong has been doing exceedingly well and there has been a big demand. Shortage of arrivals and the report o a bad harvest in Annam have caused a big rise in prices.

A month ago. merchants in Tsing- tao suspended business as a pretest against an additional tax imposed uper their goods by the local authorities. They re-opened short- ly afterwards pending a settlement of their trouble and recent tele graphie advices, state that the trouble has been settled, on the re- duction of the levy.

*

There has been very little change In the cotton yarn market which has been quiet during the last few days. Prices have however risen by one dollar per bale owing to shortage of stocks. There are fair prospects, however, of activity in the near future. According to a Shanghai telegram, prices there have remained unchanged.

Owing to shortage of supplies the price of foreign flour has been steadily rising both in Canton and Hong Kong. The current price is about sixty cents higher per bag and merchants have been reluctant to buy at this figure. It is unlike- iy that the price will drop lower in the near future as the production, of four this year is limited.

+

*

The depreciation of the Kangai Provincial Bank notes has landed many Wuchow banks and money changer shops into bankruptcy. Before the town fell to the Nanking roops, they bought heavily and held them for a rise. But the notes have steadily fallen and are now quoted at less than ten per cent. of their nominal value and the authorities bave done nothing to restore their value.

HONG KONG MARKET REPORTS.

NEW YORK STOCK

EXCHANGE.

TONE OF CONFIDENCE> RESTORED.

["D.P." Special Service.]

New Yeak, July 3, Bearish professionals forced fur- ther recessions on the New York Stock Exchange soon after the open- ing. but subsequently suffered severa setbacks when U.S. Steel and other leaders developed strength, says the Dow Jones Financial News Servico in its daily sarvey of market con- ditions.

Advances in leading issues forced the bears to take to cover and abandon their efforts.

"

With the general list temporarily in an eversold condition, there was no chance for the bears to conduct their campaign with success.

ام

Violent recoveries marked General

Motors and other issues which have recently been under pressure. Be- fore

noon the market assumed buoyancy. Later some irregularity appeared, but the list continued to keep a tone of confidence.

Individual utilities issues were strong. Standard Gas and Electric hit a new high, and the close figure was 139 as compared with 1372 yes- terday. Consolidated Gas of N.X. advanced one point, to 1491.

U.B. Steel Still Rising.

U.S. Steel closed at 207, up from yesterday's 2014. Bethlehems like wise was strong, advancing 1 to a close of 1207.

General Motors closed at 701 on its rebound from yesterday's close of ee. Willys Overland likewise recovered, going to 23 from the close

By his recent successes in Europe and the Americas, Andres Segovia has proved that the guitar, in the hands of a first rate musician is an instrument with a message. It is expected that the novelty of a re- cital by this Spanish player will attract full audiences everywhere.
