CANTON. July 93. "General Chen Tsai Tong held a Jeview this morning on the East Parade Ground of the troops in Caaten. Four.regiments and three corps of the city gendarmes, num- bering some 3,000 strong, took part and all the soldiers were neatly dressed and well equipped."
After the review Genera, Chen, in the course of a sharp speech, denounced the Soviet Government, branding its recent acts in Man- churia as a flagrant velation of the Russo-Chinese Agreement of 1324. He warned his men that they must be prepared to fight the Russians and sacrifice their lives, if need be, for their country. His object in holding this inspection was to anke. sure that the Kwangtung Army was well enough equipped and dis

FINE FOR EXCESSIVE BEATING.
From the case heard before Mr. E. W. Hamilton yesterday it is evident that mui tani are beginning to realise that the law will protect them if they are ill-used and that all they have got to do is to go to the police. The young lady in this case hardly proved herself a bread-and-butter miss, and in response, to Mr. Hamilton's sympathetic out with it, we have all been young once," she admitted a few harmless"prcadilloes with young men.
While there was no evidence of ill-treatment the Magistrate held that the beating of this high spirited girl" had been excessive, though the provocation (flirting on the roof) was real. The de- fendant, a mother and daughter were each ined $10,--
