THE LIVERPOOL CRISIS,

Mesars, Pentreath & Co. have forwarded us the following letter, dated June 93, which they have received from Messrs. Horaby, Hemelryk & Co., Liverpool:-

Our market has shewn a declin ing tendency during the week under review, partly owing to better wea. ther, and partly owing to heary liquidation of the July position in New York. As today is the notice day in New York for this position, this liquidation will no doubt cease to-night.

The Liverpool market, however, has resisted the decline to a great extent by reason of some demand from spinners at each successive: decline.

In the Cotton belt, the weather has shewn a great deal of im- provement, but the boll" weeril mcaace preverts any important. decline.

Should the weather be showery, we shal no doubt hear & good deal of talk about the pest, and on the other hand, should the weather be dry, we shall be told that the plant baa no tap root and will conse quently be, unable to withstand the drought.

Either way, we may expect bul lieh cables and a certain amount of anxiety concerning the growing

All we can say, for the moment. is that, in our opinion, there will be only a small carry over into next crop, and that, if prices are to be kept down, a big crop is essential. There is no doubt thât any serious threat to the crop which would cause the market. to fear an out. turn of less than fifteen and a half millions would have an influence on the market which would result, m higher, prices.

Empire Cotton.". According to cable advices re- ceived during the week," the entire situation appears to depend upon the nature of advices concerning the new crop. The future course of the market is consequently uncer tain.

A cable received, from Bombay, states that there has been an im provement in the cotton industry, that only ten milla remain closed and that 80,000 operatives, are now ! at work.

In Liverpool, the market has been featureless, with the exception of a little transferring of July contracts into more distant positions.

The demand for Sakel is so re- stricted that no one appears in. clined to take up July tenders. This position, however, has now declined to some 34 points under November, at which level it should attract dealers in actual cotton."

Support was in evidence at the lowest levels, and the market now looks distinctly steadier, having re covered about 25 points from the lowest,
