POPULARITY OF SUMMER SPORTS.
[BY BROADCASTER."]
Summer weather in Hong Kong hot though it is-is no deterrent to local sportsmen, and a little obser- vation will show that more people "take to outdoor exercises in summer than in winter, and that a wet week. end during the present season is productive of more annoyance and impatience from the community than. would be roused in the ..winter months. Against football'and cricket, which is played in winter in Hong Kong, tennis, lawn bowls and swimming are the principal "forms of spart in summer, and these
sports are exceedingly popular.
week-end is
Take tennis, for instance, Every Club in Hong Kong or Kowloon hus tennis-courts. There are three divi. sions in the Hong Kong Tennis League and every crowded with league games, sa much so that mid-week games have i been found necessary. Then there is the Inter-Hong tournament and the Mixed Doubles Championship, to say nothing of endless friendly. "games played every day in the season. Surely more people play tennis in Hong Kong in summer than, say, cricket in winter.
Lawn bowls also present inter- esting figures to support this Argument. There are eight Clubs in each of the two divisions of the league. Each team has twelve players, so that 192 players are engaged in league games over normal week-end. The popularity of this form of sport can be gauged by the number of competitions run locally. Every Club interested in lawn bowls run its own tourna- ment amongst members. In ad- dition to the League, there is
the competition for the Spey Royal Cup, the Singles Chan ship, the Aitkenhead Shield and the Inter-Department competition amongst Civil Servants. Now there is the talk of ladies taking up lawn bowla! It seems that the com- munity has now taken wholehearted- ly to the game, which has grown rapidly in recent years, and more and more people are being attructed by it as the seasons go by.
When we look at swimming and the popularity it enjoys among the residents of Hong Kong, all winter sports dwindle into insignificance. In recent years, swimming has gripped the popular fancy of the Chinese, and whilst moonlight bath- ing is still something of a luxury in foreign circles, the Clubs at North Poins are visited by thousands of Chinese every night, where special illumination allows their membera to enjoy a night swim! The number of people who actually swim in summer"must exceed even the 'num- ber of people who support the popular Chinese football teams in winter.
Another attractive sport which we enjoyed in former years was base- ball, a game which was getting understood in the Colony and which threatened to supersede football in popularity amongst the Chinese. Hong Kong has many baseballers who must regret the Association's inability to stage the league this year. Much has been written about the whys and wherefors of such a state of affairs, and I do not intend to tire the reader with more laments here. I can only say that for a vigorous, active, fast-moving game, baseball is hard to beat. It is a game where the spectators are as thrilled as the players, and as a popular summer game is greatly missed.
•
There are other summer, sports which are possible in Hong Kong and which a large section of the commanity enjoys. The golf links never fail to attract, and even in the hottest months Fanling, Deep Water Bay, and Happy Valley are never entirely neglected. A few enthusiastic horsemen find their way to the Polo Ground in the evenings where a chukka or two enlivens them after a day's toil in the office. Taken all in all, therefore, Hong Kong's summer affords its popula tion as much sport as at any time during the year.
