R.A.F. EXPERIMENTS ABANDONED.

The rain which fell during the week-end must be described as disappointing. There were, beavy showers in the early hours of Saturday morning and during the forenoon-sufficient, in fact, to cancel all sporting fixtures-but from the point of view of the water shortage there was not much alleviation. On Saturday the rainfall was 20 of an inch at the Royal Observatory, in Kowloon, and at at the Matilda Hospital on the Peak it was only 24 of an inch.

Yesterday, up to 4 p.m., the Observatory recorded 34 of an inch and the Matilda Hospital only .03 of an inch up to 8 p.m. As before, clouds that looked like yielding a downpour of several inches sailed over the Colony to discharge their moisture elsewhere, That there is plenty of rain about is suggested by the master of the s.s. Haiching, which arrived yesterday from Swatow, to the effect that heavy rain and aqualls were encountered during the voyage. Nothing of the nature of the drenching and lengthy tro- pical rain which supplies Hong Kong with its average rainfall has been encountered in the Colony.

Last night continual sheet lighning to the north showed that the country inland was getting the rain needed here. At about 9 p.m. a heavy shower fell, but did not last long.

The Observatory forecast"yesterday evening was, "Squally, ac
