Business in Wuchow' is still very bad and the city is making, very slow recovery from the effects of the war. Hardly any supplies are coming in from the country dis tricts and few orders are being given. Communication with the large area still held by the Kwang si forces is held up and a large position of the shipping is still in the hands of the military. Very little business is being done with either Hong Kong or Canton and prices are high despite efforts by the authorities to control the cost of everyday commodities. There is however, some revival in the trade for livestock and foodstuff, the former from the latter to. Wuchow,

Big Import Increase This Year. Sir D. R. Llewellyn said their peak export year was 1913, when South Wales exported 35,000,000 tons of cost. Last year they dropped to $6,000,000 tons, but this year they were exporting at a rate of 39,000,000 tons. They had pass ed through a very terrible time ing that period their workmen and many had gone under. Dur

had been labouring at far toc low a wage in comparison with those in other trades. After the strike of 1998 foreign countries, with the Assistance of their various Govern- ments, gave a rebate to railways, bonuses to users of native coal, placed import duties on British every other way did coal, and everything possible to kill the British industry. France had gone to Versailles stating that it would take 30 years before the French collieries would be in a position to give their Rormal output, whereas in two years they had re- covered, and they had 88,000,000 tons last year with the help of the Saar.

Industry "Not Ruined."

.I

It was all nonsense to say that the industry was ruined owing to the inroads of oil or by water power and the electrification of Italy. One, hundred million tons more coal, were used in, the world Jast year than in 1913 and 56,000,000 more in Europe, but South Wales was not getting its proper share of the trade. It was only now that the Govern- ment WRS giving help by a rchate on railway rates and
