Yet another gave his opinion that if Cragadour had drawn a better position in the Two Thousand Guineas, he would have accounted for afr. It would seem, there- fore, that the claims of Cragadour, la to-day's race are such that the animal might justifiably be expect ed to win.
Mr. Jinks, as is well known, won the Two Thousand Guineas and because the animal has never been unplaced this year, is looked upon as a very good thing for to-day's event. True, he was beaten Hunter's Moon, but it must be re membered that the verdiet was "the shortest of heads" and further that although he was beaten, he is once again in the favourite's position and might do the trick to-day. | MORE, ARRESTS ANTICIPATED.
According to a Shanghai report, as the result of a clever, swiftly executed investigation, the French Police, succeeded in arvesting the -leaders of a band of pirates who were operating in the region of Seochow and the Tai-hu Lake.
It appears that two Chinese, one of whom was a glactor, were bidden. by the gang in a house in Buc Kemy, and managed to escape by mediately placing themselves under Jumping from a window and im- the protection of an Annamite policeman, who raised the alarm'at

It appears that on the morning of April 20, the junk on which he and his companion had taken pas sage, from Soochow to Loh-tsa, was pirated in Tai-hu Lake. The junk was quickly surrounded by a dozen other vessels, a volley was fired by the pirates, and before even a ges ture of defence could be made they were in control.
After the usual looting, the pirate leader asked the captain to hand over to him six passengers for whom be might be able to obtain ransoni. The prisoners were immediately interrogated.
