“The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1891 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of loca! currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade Dame of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES - the word "Travellers' being spelled with one "]".
