AQUATICS.

HOW TO POPULARISE LOCAL SWIMMING.

merk

{BY JR. JOHNSTONE.)

[The following article has been specially written for the Daily Press by Mr. J. R. Johnstone, one of the Colony's best-known swim

Beside his experience in aquatic matters locally, Mr. John stone is well-known in Shanghai, and has had what might be termed international experience, having raced in company, with some of the world's best swimmers.

Mr. Johnstone will write on aquatics for the Daily Press from time to time," and in the course of hia next article will give some use ful hints on the "craw!" stroke as it is employed nowadays.]

The depressing state of affairs. revealed at the annual meeting of the V.R.C. recently was a great disappointment to those who have beon closely connected with local aquatics for the past few years. The V.R.C. has been the Colony's leading swimming institution, and the poor state of its finances at the present time is somewhat alarming from the swimmers' point of view. To restore the Club to its old footing, I would suggest that more aquatic meetings be held during the

and that sumber senson, events should be held, not only for members of the Club, but also mem bers of the other clubs in Hong Kong who are interested in swim- ming. Provided that the meetings are efficiently managed, they should prove remunerative to the or ganisers and a boon to swimmers,

The programme, first of all, should include races not only for the older and more experienced swimmers of Hong Kong but for beginners as well. In order to instil interest amongst novices, coaching classes should be arranged with a view to bringing promising youngsters up to championship calibre.

Now Ideas Wanted.

My experience of swimming, not only in Hong Kong but also in ather places, leads me to think that several innovations could, with profit, be introduced into Hong Kong, and I will deal with these in due course. Meantime, it would be sufficient to say that everything possible should be done to promote close and amiable re- lationship between Chinese · and non-Chinese swimmers in Hong Kong.

From what I can see for myself and from reports that have reach ed me, Chinese swimmers have made rapid strides in recent years.

THE BRAIN OF

14

'ROOM 40."

SIR A. EWING'S RECORD.

GERMANS - FOILED BY A SCHOLAR,

What has been described as "the best kept secret of the War" was locked, until many years after hostilities had ceased, in the brain of Sir Alfred Ewing, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University, who was presented with the freedom of Edinburgh recently. Sir Alfred, who is 74, retires in September...

The secret is the story of what happened in Room 30 the de- partment of the Admiralty which dealt with the solving of the enemy's wireless messages in cipher intercepted by our secret listesin

stations. Room-40 was wholly con- trolled by Sir Alfred Ewing.

Scattered up and down the east const were wireless stations equip- ped with direction-finding appara- tus, and few minutes after a German warship had sent out a message to headquarters, that mes- sage was in the hands of the stall of Room 40 and the position of the ship was pricked off on the map. It was in this way that a close watch was kept on the German fleet, who could never solve how their plans, were getting to English

fars,

The Unseen Eye.

The day before the battle of the Dogger Bank the Adamiralty were in possession of the whole of the plans of the German Navy, and during the battle they were inter- capting and solving orders in code. Similarly the battle of Jutland was watched by the unseen eye of the Admiralty.

Zeppelins on their way back from bombing raids were very lequacious, and submarines used to wireless hare their bag." It was Room 10 which decoded the message from the U 20 giving full details of the sinking of the Lusitania,

Perhaps the most spectacular thing accomplished by Room 40 was the decoding of the now notorious "Zimmerman " message which bought the United States into the War The message was the offer to Mexico by Germany of an alliance against the United States.

.....

When the message was received it was conveyed secretly to Lord Bal- four and sent to President Wilson, who had it published in the Ameri can Press That message turned the scales, and the United States entered the War on the side of the Allies.

The interport meat was something and followed closely. It also meant fair profit to the V.R.C., wha

facts.

Firstly, every Chinese endeavours to the beat of his ability, to_re- present his country, in the Far Eastern Olympics. Serious train ing is undertaken, and the result is that when the trinis are held, plenty of good talent is available.

Secondly, Inter-club sports are frequent, and races for swimmers of all standards are arranged so that as soon as a Chinese youth learns to swim, there is every in- ducement for him to train.

Thirdly, supporters of the dißer- ent clubs are both influential and generous, and there is never any difficulty in getting prizes, cups, medals, etc., which undoubtedly add interest to every sports meet- and act as an incentive to ing training.

Fourthly, there are plenty of facilitica available for practice, and coaches are not difficult Brcure.

to

There are other reasons why the Chinese are making good progress, and they now have swimmers who are as good as, if not better than, those who bold local records. In future years they are bound to come to the front, and the sooner this is realised the better.

I suggest that at future aquatic. meetings held by the V.B.C. the Committee should include events for outsidera. Only by doing so can they create keener rivalry and thus popularise their swimming fixtures.

Water-polo is one of the Colony's main sparting features in summer, and there are many reasons for promoting greater interest, Games. could easily be arranged, for instance, between civilians, the Army, and the Navy. The Chinese, I know, have some very good teams, and if water-polo in Hong Kong could be run by an aquatic federa- tion, the sport would grow by leaps and bounds in popularity.

Interest: the Ladies, There is, also, to my mind, an- other way of making the public take more interest in things will aquatic. Events for women always-interest, and in view of the progress made both by Chinese ladies and foreign ladies, there should be plenty of entries for events of this kind.
