EMPIRE DAY IN HONG KONG.

CATHEDRAL SERVICES AND A NAVY LEAGUE FILM.

HOLIDAY WITH FEW FORMALITIES.

11

Hong Kong has never favoured any very formal or elaborate celebration of Empire Day. The heat at this time of the year is too great to allow us to enjoy much ceremonial. The chief events yesterday were the impressive services during the morning at the Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals. Congregations number ing close upon a thousand-mainly of school children, Scouts' and Guides-filled both buildings, and eloquent addresses were given: emphasising in both cases" that the British Empire is founded upon justice, service and fair play and not upon militarism,

In the harbour all warships dressed ship and a gracelul com. pliment to Britain was paid by the Chinese cruiser in port, which followed the example of the British ships in displaying her bunting. Several of the British merchantmen, notably the Douglas - Company steamer, Hatching, and one of the sturdy Jardine, Matheson coasters, were decorated in traditional sea fashion. It is a pity, however, that all ships in harbour dying the red ensign, cannot follow suit on these occasions,

The day was kept as a holiday by the Law Courts and Govern ment offices, and by a few business houses. The schools held the suzual celebrations in the mornings, and the afternoon was, in most

cases, devoted to Hong Kong's favourite summer recreation... launch picnics. The weather was worthy of the day and though there were a few clouds there was sunshine most of the time.

The Navy League flm "Keep Watch," shown at the Queen's Theatre at 5 p.m., proved ́sa admirable lesson in the nature of Britain's Navy and Merchant Service and their joint work in keeping open the trade routes upon which Britain, the heart of the Empire, is dependent for the necessitities of life.
