Business in Wuebow is almost at a standstill. The exchange rate for Canton or Hong Kong money is ac high that prices of commodities have risen three times higher than urnal. Much less business is being done by the merchants, especially those, dealing in foreign goods and Juxuries.

On account of the dullness of the market, smaller cargoes have been exported to Wuchow from Canton and Hong Kong lately. A number of steam launches have resumed running between Hong Kong and Wochow. They have carried smaller cargoes with the exception of rice. Passengers are also very few.

An almtet unprecedented dull market for sugar is being experienc ed in Hong Kong since the Strike in 1925. The decline in this busi ness is attributed to the plentiful harvests in Java. It is expected that the market will continue dall, if not worse, us it is reported that 150,000 tons of sugar will be im ported monthly into China from Cuba in future.

Since the hostilities betweea Kwangtung and Kwangsi, deinand for groundnut oil has been slight but prices have been firm. Arrivals Telegraphic advices from Sbang-of wood-tar oil and camellaut hai indicate that the cotton yarn vil from the West and North River market is still quiet. The market districts are small and consumption are steady. The in Canton is also dull but prices limited. Prices are frm Latest Canton market market in bean oil is dull and prices have fallen. As already reported, the first erop of silk in Kwangtung this year was not satisfactory due to the exceed ingly high price of mulberry leaves which was then seld at nearly five dollars per picul and consequently very little or no profits were made by the silk filatures. Regarding the the silk present second crop, filatures are again disappointed on account of the drop in prices. They were hopeful of more favour- able conditions when the price of mulberry leaves dropped compara tively lower than the first erop and fewer silk-worms perished, but their Tronoh Min58 1*******

MARRIAGE LAW REFORM.

AN APPEAL, TO CANDIDATES FOR PARLIAMENT.

wwwwwwwwth

An appeal to all candidates for Parliament, issued by the Marriage Law Reform League, calls attention to the recommendations of the

Royal Commission on Divorce and Matrimonial Causes, published in 1912, the chief proposals relating. to divorce being the following-

Any married person may apply for a divorce on any one or more of the following grounds, that is to say that the defendant:-(a) has since the marriage committed adultery; or (b) has deserted the applicant for a period of at least or (c) has since three years; the marriage treated the applicant

with cruelty; or (d) is incurably

insane, and has been continuously a certified lunatic for a period of at least five years immediately pre- ceding the application; or (c) is an incurable habitual drunkard, and has for period of at least three years been separated from the ap- plicant under a temporary separa- tion order made under this Act on GERMAN COAL INDUSTRY. the ground of habitual drunken-

The proposals were embodied by Lord Buckminster in the Matri monial Cases Bill of 1920, which, after prolonged debate, was passed by an unusually large majority by the House of Lords. This Bill has never been eren presented to the House of Commons, and only the first of all the recommendations bas been carried out, though 20 years have gone by since the Royal Com mission was set up. toas.

The report stated that the tem porary financial relief caused by the British coal stoppage of 1928 had been completely centralized by the scarcely profitable business of 1927 and 1928, and by the necessity for investing capital in new equipment. The price increases of May last had been offset by higher costsy and wage increases. It was difficult to see how the industry would raise the money necessary for the main tenance and improvement of the *mices.

At the debate upon this, report in the Council, the miners' representa tives criticized its gloomy prognos tications, which they considered to reflect too strongly the owners MAN'S SUICIDE 'LETTER TO view, and pointed out that wages were much higher in England. They put forward the suggestion that, in view of the rationalization move- ment in the British industry, the time was ripe for a meeting "with our English partners at the confer ence table, with a view to reaching an understanding about markets."
