SPEEDING THE FLYING SQUAD.
GROWTH OF THE MOTOR- ING LIMB OF THE LAW.
With the arrival of Lord Byng At the head of Scotland Yard, criminals are finding that Britain's internationally famed police and de- tective forces are becoming the most formidable of any nation, and the famous Flying. Squad has been so speeded up that it is now the fastest and most effective body of its kind in the world.
A
An inconspicuous touring car of nondescript colour dashing through police trap at 85 or 70 miles an hour, or cutting along path in a trafic block miraculously cleared by the point duty police: man-that-is-the twentieth century equivalent of the stout gentlemen in the red waistcoats who ran from their headquarters in Bow Street laboriously after fleeting criminals in stage-coaches and post-chaises a century ago. The very names given to that clutching hand of the law by the Victorian generation and by this exemplify
the tremendous changes that have taken place then Bow Street Runners. to-day the Flying Squad.
These changes are not confined to the methods of the upholders of the law, for it is the adoption by the law-breakers of science's latest inventions that have made it in perative for Scotland Yard to fight them with their own, weapons.
A NEW LEYLAND FOR

Leyland Motors, Ltd., has recent- 1s produced a new design of four- cylinder single-decked 'bus to meet the requirements of such authori tics. It is known as the "Lion Four" and replaces that famous model, the "Lion," which has be come almost the standard single- desked 'bus in Great Britain, since it was first produced in 1925.
The new Lion-Four" is very similar in appearance to the com- pany's six-cylinder Tiger." It has the same low loading line and sleping windscreen. Mechanically, too, it has many features in com. mon-the same gearbox is used, the majority of moving parts of the engine, with the exception of the Pistons, are the same, brakes and wearing parts of the axles are identical. A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT.
The completion by a British motor ercle of 25,000 miles on the Montbéry track in France in 23 days is a genuine triumph for British workmanship.
Something in the nature of a sensation has been caured through out the Continent and there is no doubt that this wonderful perform ance has added very materially to the prestige of the British motor- evele. It must be remembered that the test, which surpasses anything | of the kind previously attempted. was equivalent to three years normal nrage, at an exceptionally bigh average speed, crowded into as many weeks..
