HANDWRITING EXPERT GIVES EVIDENCE.

MR. JENKIN CONCLUDES HIS OPENING.

ALLEGED DOUBTS AS TO FORGERY OF SIGNATURES.

The opening of the defence by Mr. F. O, Jenkin, K.O., in the case before the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Gollan) and a special jury in the Suprema Court, in which the Treasury is suing the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for the re-crediting of $260,000, debited in consequence of the Carvalho Yeo frauda, was concluded yesterday.

The defence is contending negligence on the part of the Treasury and holds that, on this account, the Government la estopped from making any claim. It is further contended that the signatures on the three alleged forged cheques are gennine,

Continuing his address to the jury, Mr. Jenkin asked what would have been the position as between the Government, particularly the Treasury Department, and the Bank if the occurrence with regard to the extraction of cheques from the two cheque books were discovered and the uses to which they could be put properly appreciated in the Trea- eury at the time the discoveries were made?

It was Tsang On Wing's duty to report an occurrence of that kind to his chief, either directly or through Mr. Black,
