"Aida" is, like most grand opers, rather artificial in its story, and one does not feel the tragedy of the lovers very deeply. But the music is extraordinarily fine, and were the tragic motive more deeply stress- ed, it would in conjunction with the dramatic action, be unpleasantly harrowing.
