The New Silhouette.

Dress designers have, during past seasons, played, with exaggerated earnestness, with simple forms, but the Spring of 1929 has marked a definite change.

The new silhouette is neither fall and round nor tight and narrow, bat something much more subtle, essentially decorative and essentially modern-.

ATTRACTIVE MODELS IN LOCAL SHOPS.

IN LANE, CRAWFORD'S.

There are many attractive hats to be found in Lane, Crawford's The first which attracted my atten- tion was A big capeline of black crin with a tulle edging to the brim. An exotic locking tulip in tones of orchid and green, is posed on the brim. Very smart is a big cinche shape with a wide brim. which is carried out in eocon brown tagel and has a velvet band in a -deeper toac.. A third charming large hat is of pink beige tagel bound with gros grain ribbon with a cleverly designed mount of the same ribbon plissé like a shell.

Among the smaller hata is a most) attractive little cloche which is made of cretonne printed in a rose bud design with A tiny brim of The folded, beige crepe de chine. cretoane is stitched over with coloured silks to a accentuate the pattern and between the rose buds tiny ruffles of écru lace have been sewn on. In almost direct opposi- tion to the decorative motive of this hat is a chocle of bottle green and black bakt. The black is used for the brim and a band, which runs round the top of the crown, having a small buckle on either side.

PARIS AND THE BRIM.

the Paris is concentrating on brims of our new summer millinery. Unless they are very large we are seldom permitted to wear them at

all.

The dictum of Paris is "off the forehead" and the brims of smaller hats mount is odd ways to accent this new mode. Shallow crows uphold the ordinance, and lest you feel tempted to disobey, the crown is.nade very low so that you cannot pull it down even if you wish.

The hats now shewing in our local shops demonstrate the best and most becoming aspects of the new mode.

DOLLY VARDON HATS.

In the Dolly Vardon Hat Shop there are, some more of those most

attractive hat and scarf sets of

printed crepe de chine. The hats of small cloche shape, are stitched, and the colour effects are very

pretty. There are, too, some rather bigger cluche shapes of legorn. which are trimmed with applica tions or, bands of printed silk. saw, too, a very chie model in black paillasson trimmed in the same fashion with incrustations of green. printed silk, each of which was stitched on with a thread of green angora wool.

Among the new comers are some semi-tailored sports hats made of straw silk in various shades, with a plain band of grea grain. The material, for it cannot properly be called straw, is beautifully soft. and yet springy. It can be folded up and crushed in the most heart. less way, and immediately regains its form uninjured.

Two lovely hats attracted my at- tention which were trimmed with lace. One is a capeline of soft pínky beige erin, with écru shadow lace on the brim, and running. in points up the crown. A narrow ribbon of beige gros grain is tied across the crown high on the left and low on the right. The other of crinoline is also a capeline" of fairly generous proportions. this case it is the lace-also "black- which is arranged on the, diagonal. It falls over the brim on the left side towards the front to make a tiny veil, and is bound on with a narrow black satin ribbon.

hip line what is known as "planishing which means that the pan has been hammered to close the pores of the iron.

That the handles of all frying- pans should be riveted on.

It is economy to have frying- pans of different sizes. When cook- ing small quantities of food less fat can be used with a small, frying- pan; in a large pao more fat must be used to get the required depth, and this often leads to waste.

BATHING KIT FROM LANE, CRAWFORD'S.

Lane, Crawford's are showing some very attractive bathing cus tumes this season.

The latest costume is made almost cxactly like a man's with no skirt, and the colour effects are bright and modernistic in design. For those that prefer them, however, are suits with a skirt attachment, which follow a similar decorative scheme, and more definitely feminine suits of thinner stockinette made with a brassière attachment inside. Ainong the woollen models is one, with a skirt, of Lido blue, the bodice being striped diagonally with broad bands of blue, pink, and yellow. A black suit is similarly striped" with fawn and red. Single colour suits are, of course, most becoming to all but the very slender, and there is, at present a nice selection of these.

Among the stockinette suits I noticed one, with no skirt, with a white bodice decorated with scarlet "lightening and black trunks. Apple green with large black spots is also very smart and has a short skirt, covering black trunks...

A chic little suit is carried out! in burnt orange with a skirt of white edged frills, and bright lemon yellow has "sunburst" encrusted in black which runs from the left hip and spreads right over the suit, under. this is worn black trunks. Another yellow suit has do skirt, the, bodice is checked with narrow straps of black and set onto the black trunks in vandyke points, giving ap attractive harlequin

effect.

PRINCESS MARY'S

A MODEL HOUSEWIFE.

[BRITISH UNITED PRESS.]

LONDON, April 25. Thirty-two years ago King George and Queen Mary become the proud parents of their first and only daughter, Princess Mary.

To-day, as Viscountess Lascelles, wife of one of the wealthiest men in England, and mother of two amall sons, George and Gerald, Princess Mary celebrated the thirty-second anniversary of her birthday.

During the last six months or su, however, the Princess has not been able to give all her attention to these domestic activities. The illness of her father, King George, in its early stages necessitated res peated journeys to and from Lon- don and Yorkshire..

When the King's condition grow worte: Queen Mary felt, and the Princess was the first to agree, that' the latter's presence at Buckingham Palace was advisable, if only as a companion to her mother, who was put to great strain.
